It <strong>in</strong>corporates <strong>in</strong>formation about both the oldand the new rules and provides guidance on protect<strong>in</strong>gyour health, the health of others and the environment.There are other rules about stor<strong>in</strong>g and dispos<strong>in</strong>g ofthese products safely that you must also follow but arenot <strong>in</strong>cluded <strong>in</strong> this document.For all of the rules that apply to <strong>pirimiphos</strong>-<strong>methyl</strong><strong>smoke</strong> <strong>generators</strong>, check the controls for approvedhazardous substances database on our website.Primiphos-<strong>methyl</strong> is toxicPirimiphos-<strong>methyl</strong> <strong>smoke</strong> <strong>generators</strong> are used tocontrol beetles, moths and weevils <strong>in</strong> silos andwhitefly <strong>in</strong> glasshouses. However, <strong>pirimiphos</strong><strong>methyl</strong>is an organophosphate and is toxic toboth people and the environment. You shouldonly use <strong>pirimiphos</strong>-<strong>methyl</strong> <strong>smoke</strong> <strong>generators</strong> ifthere are no safer alternatives available.Products that conta<strong>in</strong> primiphos-<strong>methyl</strong>Check the label of your <strong>smoke</strong> generator tosee if <strong>pirimiphos</strong>-<strong>methyl</strong> is one of the active<strong>in</strong>gredients. If it is, you need to follow thepractices outl<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> this document.The Actellic Smoke Generator conta<strong>in</strong>s<strong>pirimiphos</strong>-<strong>methyl</strong>.Protect your healthGra<strong>in</strong> silos are dangerous because they have reduced oxygenand little ventilation. Glass houses can also be dangerous if theyare not ventilated properly after be<strong>in</strong>g treated.If you are <strong>us<strong>in</strong>g</strong> a <strong>smoke</strong> generator <strong>in</strong> a gra<strong>in</strong> silo or glasshouseyou need to take extra care to avoid exposure to <strong>pirimiphos</strong><strong>methyl</strong>.If you aren’t careful and do not follow the manufacturer’s<strong>in</strong>structions you could seriously damage your health or beovercome by the <strong>smoke</strong> and die.Shortcuts must not be taken when <strong>us<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>pirimiphos</strong>-<strong>methyl</strong><strong>smoke</strong> <strong>generators</strong>.After <strong>us<strong>in</strong>g</strong> a <strong>smoke</strong> generator you must wash your handsthoroughly with soap and water before eat<strong>in</strong>g, dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g, chew<strong>in</strong>ggum, smok<strong>in</strong>g or <strong>us<strong>in</strong>g</strong> the toilet. If you don’t, you could end upconsum<strong>in</strong>g <strong>pirimiphos</strong>-<strong>methyl</strong>, which can cause long-termhealth problems.www.epa.govt.nz


OCTOBER 20132<strong>Safely</strong> <strong>us<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>smoke</strong> <strong>generators</strong> <strong>conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>pirimiphos</strong>-<strong>methyl</strong> <strong>in</strong> greenhouses and silos EPA0293You should also change the clothes you wore when ignit<strong>in</strong>gthe <strong>smoke</strong> generator and, have a shower or bath with soap andwater, shampoo your hair, and put on clean clothes.Wash your work clothes separately from other clothes beforewear<strong>in</strong>g them aga<strong>in</strong>.Always have a safety data sheet (SDS) available for yourproducts. Information about what to do <strong>in</strong> the event ofa poison<strong>in</strong>g is usually given <strong>in</strong> Section 4 of the SDS.Us<strong>in</strong>g <strong>pirimiphos</strong>-<strong>methyl</strong><strong>smoke</strong> <strong>generators</strong> safelyThe safest way to use a <strong>pirimiphos</strong>-<strong>methyl</strong> <strong>smoke</strong> generator is tohave the operator ignite the fuse and then immediately leave andclose up the glasshouse or silo be<strong>in</strong>g treated. If there is a risk that theoperator could be exposed to the <strong>smoke</strong> before leav<strong>in</strong>g the build<strong>in</strong>gthey should also wear respiratory protective equipment (RPE).Approved handlerTo use a <strong>pirimiphos</strong>-<strong>methyl</strong> <strong>smoke</strong> generator you must be anapproved handler or be under the direct supervision of anapproved handler.Don’t enter the treated build<strong>in</strong>g for 12 hoursAfter <strong>us<strong>in</strong>g</strong> a <strong>smoke</strong> generator the build<strong>in</strong>g should be wellventilatedbefore anyone re-enters the build<strong>in</strong>g.People can only re-enter the build<strong>in</strong>g once the build<strong>in</strong>g has beenwell-ventilated for 12 hours after be<strong>in</strong>g treated with a <strong>smoke</strong>generator. If someone needs to re-enter the build<strong>in</strong>g to ventilateit they must wear appropriate respiratory protective equipment,and personal protective equipment (PPE) such as overalls, boots,gloves and goggles.This 12 hour period of time is called a restricted entry <strong>in</strong>terval(REI) and is <strong>in</strong> place to protect peoples’ health from any <strong>smoke</strong>that is still <strong>in</strong> the air.Wear the right safety gearBecause of the toxicity of <strong>pirimiphos</strong>-<strong>methyl</strong> you must wear theright safety gear to protect your health. If you are an employer,you must provide your staff with this gear and tra<strong>in</strong> them to wearit properly.The label and safety data sheet will give you <strong>in</strong>formation aboutwhat PPE and RPE you must wear when handl<strong>in</strong>g the product. Ifyou can’t f<strong>in</strong>d this <strong>in</strong>formation, call the supplier of the product orcontact the Health and Safety Group at the M<strong>in</strong>istry of Bus<strong>in</strong>ess,Innovation and Employment dur<strong>in</strong>g bus<strong>in</strong>ess hours on0800 20 90 20.Protect yourself – with full PPEWhen <strong>us<strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>pirimiphos</strong>-<strong>methyl</strong> <strong>smoke</strong> <strong>generators</strong> youmust wear:chemical resistant coverallschemical resistant gloveschemical resistant footwear plus socksprotective eyewearchemical resistant headgear.And RPEYou must also wear appropriate respiratory protectiveequipment to protect aga<strong>in</strong>st breath<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the substance<strong>in</strong> dust, mist, gas or vapour forms.After wear<strong>in</strong>g PPE make sure you clean it accord<strong>in</strong>g to the manufacturer’s<strong>in</strong>structions before you, or anyone else, wears it aga<strong>in</strong>.If the <strong>in</strong>secticide label offers specific <strong>in</strong>structions on how to cleanthe PPE, follow those <strong>in</strong>structions.If there are no <strong>in</strong>structions available you should wash the PPE<strong>in</strong> detergent and hot water. The person wash<strong>in</strong>g the PPE shouldwear gloves when handl<strong>in</strong>g it.Monitor your healthWear<strong>in</strong>g personal protective equipment does not elim<strong>in</strong>ateexposure to a hazardous substance. If you are an employer andyour staff are <strong>us<strong>in</strong>g</strong> organophosphates, you are required underthe Health and Safety <strong>in</strong> Employment (HSE) Act to monitor yourstaffs’ exposure to organophosphates, and with their <strong>in</strong>formedconsent, monitor their health.This monitor<strong>in</strong>g is usually done by a health service provider suchas an occupational health nurse or general practitioner with aqualification <strong>in</strong> occupational health.For further <strong>in</strong>formation on how to set up a monitor<strong>in</strong>gregime see the <strong>in</strong>formation sheet Organophosphates:health effects, monitor<strong>in</strong>g and first aid on thewww.bus<strong>in</strong>ess.govt.nz/healthandsafetygroup website.SignsThe person <strong>in</strong> charge of the build<strong>in</strong>g where <strong>smoke</strong> <strong>generators</strong><strong>conta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g</strong> <strong>pirimiphos</strong>-<strong>methyl</strong> are be<strong>in</strong>g used, along with theperson <strong>us<strong>in</strong>g</strong> the <strong>smoke</strong> generator, must ensure that signs are putup at each po<strong>in</strong>t of entry to the build<strong>in</strong>g to let people know whenit is safe to re-enter.

Signs must be <strong>in</strong> English, be clear,easily understood and readable from a distant of at least tenmetres.
