Dr. Benson asks her medicalsecretary, Bill, to call Mr.Crotchety’s oncologist to discuss his lab results.Bill: Dr. Benson, I have Dr. Oncologist on line 2 for you.Dr. Benson: Good morning Dr. Oncologist. I would like to discuss Mr. Crude Crotchety’s labresults with you.Dr. Oncologist: I have that file right here on my desk. Just a second…. Okay. Let’s see.Dr. Benson: The pathology report on Mr. Crotchety’s sputum sample took nearly two weeks tocome back. The nurse who took the sample mislabeled it and it took nearly two weeks toidentify the mistake.Dr. Oncologist: That’s completely unacceptable. You and I both know that when you’re dealingwith cancer, you can’t waste any time with treatment. These could be grounds for amalpractice suit. This nurse will definitely be reprimanded or fired.Dr. Benson: The main purpose of my call today is to discuss treatment options for Mr. Crotchety. Iknow that there are several experimental drug treatments available, but which do you thinksuits his particular case?Dr. Oncologist: Before I decide on a treatment, I want to talk to the hospital pathologist who lookedat Mr. Crotchety’s sputum sample. I want to make sure that we are looking at the right labresults. I will give you a call when I make a decision.Dr. Oncologist immediately calls Dr. Pathologist at Grady Memorial Hospital.Dr. Pathologist: Grady Pathology, this is Dr. Pathologist speaking.Dr. Oncologist: Good morning Dr. Pathologist. This is Dr. Oncologist speaking. I am calling todiscuss the lab results for Mr. Crotchety.Dr. Pathologist: I know the case well. It caused us a lot of trouble. My laboratory technician did agreat job of locating and preparing the sample though. The nurse who collected the samplemislabeled it and it was sent off site. The results in the pathology report are correct – theyjust took longer than they should have.Dr. Oncologist: That was all I needed to know. I wanted to ensure that I was reading results for theright patient. Thanks for your help. Have a good day.Dr. Oncologist calls Dr. Benson to inform her of the recommended treatment. He also recommendsthat Mr. Crotchety get an MRI scan to confirm the presence of the lung cancer. After discussing thetreatment and side-effects, Dr. Benson begins to call Mr. Crotchety’s other specialists to confirm

What medications do you have Mr. Crotchety taking that mightnot appear on his chart yet?Dr. Cardiologist: Let me check his chart…. Let’s see he’s just taking Atacand. There shouldn’t beany problems with Mr. Crotchety taking both medications.Dr. Benson: Thanks for your help. Have a good one.Dr. Benson speaks with Dr. Vick, the ER physician who tended to Mr. Crotchety, to discuss themedication he prescribed.Dr. Benson: When Mr. Crotchety came into the ER two weeks ago, what did you prescribe to assistwith his breathing?Dr. Vick: We just gave him pseudoephedrine to relieve his congestion.Dr. Benson: Thanks for your help. Do you happen to know the phlebotomist on duty when Mr.Crotchety was there?Dr. Vick: I have the chart right here. It looks like it was James Derham. If you need a copy of thecharts, I can get someone in medical records to send it over to your office.

How may I help you?Dr. Benson: I want to discuss a patient you worked with two weeks ago. Do you remember Mr.Crude Crotchety?James: He’s not exactly forgettable. I remember that night really well. I came in to see him just asthe nurse was finishing up taking his vital signs.Dr. Benson: Do you remember the nurse taking a sputum sample?James: Now that you mention it, I remember hearing him coughing up the sample. She was in oneof her moods that night, too. When I came in to draw blood, she left with the sample.Dr. Benson: Thanks a lot James.Dr. Benson believes she has identified the source of the mix up. She calls the Grady nursingsupervisor to discuss the incident. The nursing supervisor investigates the case and identifies theproblem: Nurse Sassy. Nurse Sassy is paged to report to the nursing supervisor’s office.Nurse Sassy: How you expect me to do my job if you always interrupting? I ain’t feeling so goodand I got things to do.Nursing Supervisor: That’s what we’re here to discuss. You mishandled a patient sample….again.You cost a patient two weeks of cancer treatment because of your carelessness. We cannotafford for you to keep making these kinds of careless mistakes. Because of your history withthese kinds of mistakes, we have no other choice but to terminate your employment withGrady Memorial Hospital. A hospital guard will see you to your station and then out of thebuilding. Your last check will be mailed to your home address.Nurse Sassy: What? Do you know who I am? I mean really…the nerve…you ain’t seen the last ofSassy…no way!!Sassy storms out of the office and breaks off one of her nine inch heels in the process. The nursingsupervisor knows that she hasn’t seen the last of Sassy…
