Teachers’ Introducti<strong>on</strong>:Level:This unit is designed for students who understand p1ace value andknow <strong>the</strong> basic additi<strong>on</strong> and subtracti<strong>on</strong> facts.Goals:1. The students will learn to manipulate <strong>on</strong>e form of ca1cu1ator usedin many Asian countries.2. The c<strong>on</strong>cept of p1ace value will be reinforced.3. The students will learn ano<strong>the</strong>r method of adding and subtracting.Instructi<strong>on</strong>s• The following student sheets may be copied so that your students haveindividual sets.• Individual suanpan for your students can be ordered from ChinaSprout:http://www.chinasprout.com/shop/Product # A948 or ATG022Evaluati<strong>on</strong>The students will be able to manipulate a suanpan to set numbers, andto do simple additi<strong>on</strong> and subtracti<strong>on</strong> problems.Vocabularysuanpansetbeamrodc1ear<strong>on</strong>es rodtens rodhundreds rod2

Card 1Suanpan – <strong>Abacus</strong>The abacus is an ancient calculator still used in China and o<strong>the</strong>r Asiancountries. In Chinese it is called a “Suanpan.” It is a frame divided intoan upper and lower secti<strong>on</strong> by a bar called <strong>the</strong> “beam.” The abacus canbe used for additi<strong>on</strong>, subtracti<strong>on</strong>, multiplicati<strong>on</strong>, and divisi<strong>on</strong>.3

Card 2Clearing <strong>the</strong> suanpan:• Before you begin work <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> Suanpan you must clear it.• This is d<strong>on</strong>e by moving all of <strong>the</strong> beads in <strong>the</strong> upper secti<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong>top of <strong>the</strong> frame and all of <strong>the</strong> beads in <strong>the</strong> lower secti<strong>on</strong> to <strong>the</strong>bottom of <strong>the</strong> frame.Clear your Suanpan. It should look like this:4

Card 3Using your fingers to move <strong>the</strong> beads:• Put your Suanpan <strong>on</strong> your desk.• Hold it with your left hand.• Use your thumb to move <strong>the</strong> beads in <strong>the</strong> lower secti<strong>on</strong> up.• Use your index finger to move <strong>the</strong> beads in <strong>the</strong> lower secti<strong>on</strong>down.• Use your middle finger to move <strong>the</strong> upper secti<strong>on</strong> beads up anddown.5

Card 4The Suanpan has thirteen rods. The exercises we will do will use <strong>the</strong>first three rods – <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>es rod, <strong>the</strong> tens rod, and <strong>the</strong> hundreds rod.6

Card 5There are two beads <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> upper secti<strong>on</strong> of each rod and five beads <strong>on</strong><strong>the</strong> lower secti<strong>on</strong> of each rod.• Each bead in <strong>the</strong> upper secti<strong>on</strong> has a value of 5.• Each bead in <strong>the</strong> lower secti<strong>on</strong> has a value of 1.*To set a number less than 10, you <strong>on</strong>ly need to count and move beads<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>es rod.7

Card 6When reading <strong>the</strong> Suanpan, you count <strong>on</strong>ly <strong>the</strong> beads that have beenmoved to <strong>the</strong> beam in <strong>the</strong> middle. Here are some numbers and how <strong>the</strong>y would look <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> Suanpan:8

Card 7To set <strong>the</strong> number 5: (“Set” means to move <strong>the</strong> beads to <strong>the</strong> positi<strong>on</strong>that shows <strong>the</strong> number indicated)• move <strong>the</strong> bead in <strong>the</strong> upper secti<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>es rod down to <strong>the</strong>beam. (The fifth bottom bead is not used in additi<strong>on</strong>.)• As so<strong>on</strong> as five bottom beads are needed, clear <strong>the</strong> bottom secti<strong>on</strong>and bring down <strong>on</strong> bead from <strong>the</strong> top.9

Card 9Answer Sheet for <str<strong>on</strong>g>Exercise</str<strong>on</strong>g>s <strong>on</strong> Card #8:11

Card 10To set <strong>the</strong> number 10 <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> Suanpan:• clear <strong>the</strong> beads <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>es rod and• move <strong>on</strong>e bead <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> lower secti<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> tens rod up to <strong>the</strong>beam.• As so<strong>on</strong> as you have 5 beads up in <strong>the</strong> bottom secti<strong>on</strong> and <strong>on</strong>ebead down in <strong>the</strong> top secti<strong>on</strong>,• clear that row and• push up <strong>on</strong>e in <strong>the</strong> bottom secti<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> next column.• Your Suanpan should look like this:12

Card 11This is how <strong>the</strong> number 11 would look:• With a number of 10 or more, begin with <strong>the</strong> column you willneed that is fur<strong>the</strong>st to <strong>the</strong> left.o To make 11, first move up <strong>on</strong>e bead <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> lower secti<strong>on</strong> of<strong>the</strong> tens rod,o <strong>the</strong>n move up <strong>on</strong>e bead <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> lower secti<strong>on</strong> of <strong>the</strong> <strong>on</strong>es rod.13
