It isnow 41 years since the doors of the Academy closed for thelast time. However, the Academy lives on through all of us.In a paper published by the Academy in 1960 entitled “ACentury of Service”, both the past and the future of theAcademy were addressed. The opening paragraph read“Augustana Academy has rendered as a century of servicesince it was founded in Chicago, Ill, in 1860. Thousands ofyouth have been better prepared for useful membership inthe Church and for worthy citizenship in their respectivecommunities and the nation. It went on to say “AugustanaAcademy guides youth in the critical and significant teenageyears when they are being established in the foundations formaking life’s three great decisions concerning a lifephilosophy, a life vocation, and a life mate.”In the section entitled,“The Forward Look”, both short andlong range plans are laid out. These plans included thebuilding as Academy enrollment was outgrowing Old Main.Distinguished Alumni AwardEarl BoyumClass of 1948Earl Boyum grew up in the twin cities of Minneapolis-St. Paul.He graduated from Augustana Academy in 1948 and fromAugustana College in 1952 where he was an all conference tackleon the Viking football team.
