Aughintober Star <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong> North LOL 38<strong>The</strong> exact beginnings <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lodge in manry Units were formed across <strong>the</strong>Aughintober are, like many o<strong>the</strong>rs, country. One such unit was <strong>the</strong> Fort Edwardshrouded in <strong>the</strong> mists <strong>of</strong> time and due toso few records surviving we may neverknow all <strong>the</strong> details.<strong>The</strong>re were many Orange associationsand clubs formed during <strong>the</strong> 18th centuryto commemorate <strong>the</strong> Glorious Revolutionand <strong>the</strong> victory <strong>of</strong> William III overJames II. <strong>The</strong>se were on a local level andnot nationally organized. One such organizationin South Tyrone was <strong>the</strong> OrangeBoys Society formed, in 1792, byJames Wilson <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong> Dyan.Following <strong>the</strong> <strong>Battle</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Diamond on21 September 1795 it was decided thata more organized approach was neededfor <strong>the</strong> defence <strong>of</strong> Protestants andProtestantism and lodges were formed.Each lodge was to have a warrant and anumber, so when <strong>the</strong> men from Aughintobergot to Loughgall <strong>the</strong>y receivedNo 38. Legend has it that when on <strong>the</strong>irway <strong>the</strong>re <strong>the</strong>y met <strong>the</strong> Cullenfad menreturning with No 30. So in only a fewdays hundreds <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se lodges wereformed in Ulster and fur<strong>the</strong>r afield.In 1796, because <strong>of</strong> rising tensions and<strong>the</strong> threat <strong>of</strong> a French invasion, Yeo-Yeoman Cavalry which was basedin <strong>the</strong> Townland <strong>of</strong> Killymaddy. It wascommanded by an experienced soldier,Waterhouse Crymble Lindsay, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Lindsay’s <strong>of</strong> Cahoo, cousins <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lindsay’s<strong>of</strong> Loughry. In 1798 <strong>the</strong>y formed alodge No 677 and W.C. Lindsay was <strong>the</strong>WM. <strong>The</strong> early Roll/Minute Book for <strong>the</strong>lodge was <strong>of</strong>fered for sale on E-Bay afew years ago and is now in <strong>the</strong> possession<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> GOLI.Several <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> visitors at<strong>the</strong>ir meetings were from members <strong>of</strong>LOL 38, who were also members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Yeomanry <strong>the</strong>re.In <strong>the</strong> early days <strong>the</strong> lodge met in <strong>the</strong>home or a barn <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Johnstonfamilies that lived in Aughintober. In 1862<strong>the</strong>y gained possession <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> old AughintoberSchool, which had been replacedby a new one built by Lady CarolineBurges at Parkanaur.This building served <strong>the</strong> lodge well, aswell being a base for <strong>the</strong> Ulster SpecialConstabulary from 1920 and for <strong>the</strong> UlsterHome Guard during WW 2, until1965 when plans for an extension wereformed. In fact work had started to clearaway and level <strong>the</strong> groundto <strong>the</strong> rear <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hall whenBro Tom Doran arrived homefrom <strong>the</strong> US for one <strong>of</strong> his annualtrips. He took a look atwhat was planned and beforelong he had persuaded <strong>the</strong>members to move to a newsite kindly granted by Bro BobCuddy.
