JamesEmery, Brethren, Sisters,Bands, <strong>the</strong>ir families andfriends to <strong>the</strong> historic village<strong>of</strong> Castlecaulfieldto celebrate <strong>the</strong> <strong>323rd</strong>Anniversary <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Battle</strong><strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Boyne</strong>.May I take this opportunity to thank<strong>the</strong> brethren for <strong>the</strong>ir help and supportthroughout this busy year.Our <strong>2013</strong> <strong>Celebration</strong>s began in Februarywhen a mission, led by Mr George Conn,brought a time <strong>of</strong> wonderful SpiritualBlessing.<strong>The</strong> annual table quiz and bowls tournamentwere also a success and enjoyed byall who took part.Following on from <strong>the</strong> mission, Georgereturned in April, when he spoke on <strong>the</strong>Life, Faith and Works <strong>of</strong> Cyrus McCormick,synonymous with <strong>the</strong> mechanicalreaper.June sees our programme ga<strong>the</strong>r pacewith <strong>the</strong> Annual Arch Parade and BBQquickly followed by our three AnniversaryServices in <strong>the</strong> local churches. Early <strong>July</strong>will allow our more energetic brethren totake part in <strong>the</strong> 5-a-side Football Competitionto be held on <strong>the</strong> new 3G Syn<strong>the</strong>ticPitch in <strong>the</strong> village.As a District we were pleased to financiallysupport <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong> Faith Mission,Co Tyrone Frontier Relief Societyand <strong>The</strong> Grand Master’s Appeal, whichthis year is <strong>the</strong> Christian Institute. May Ithank most sincerely all those who haveassisted with and supported our eventsthus far.Our private lodges have been very proactiveover <strong>the</strong> past number <strong>of</strong> years.Halls have been improved, bannerettesand banners unfurled and lodge regaliadedicated. <strong>The</strong> village has benefitedfrom <strong>the</strong> building <strong>of</strong> two new houses,<strong>the</strong> development <strong>of</strong> a 3G Syn<strong>the</strong>tic Pitchand <strong>the</strong> establishing <strong>of</strong> Castle Media, aSocial Enterprise Initiative. I commendall those involved with <strong>the</strong>se projects andcongratulate <strong>the</strong>m for <strong>the</strong>ir vision andenterprise.<strong>The</strong> Orange Institution lost 337 membersduring <strong>the</strong> “Troubles” in Nor<strong>the</strong>rn Ireland.We in County Tyrone lost 85 membersleaving behind 44 widows and 24 orphans.As a District Lodge we know firsthand<strong>the</strong> sorrow and suffering caused bysuch deaths as we sadly lost 2 <strong>of</strong> our ownbrethren. I commend <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>County Tyrone Frontier Relief Society as<strong>the</strong>y continue to support <strong>the</strong> remainingwidows and orphans <strong>of</strong> this County.Our Glorious Institution was formed in1795 following <strong>the</strong> <strong>Battle</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Diamondand continues to flourish with membershipthroughout <strong>the</strong> world. Today, in <strong>2013</strong>as in 1795, we must continue to standfirm in our Protestantism as we defendagainst <strong>the</strong> erosion <strong>of</strong> our culture andtraditions. As Orangemen we trust in Godand put our Faith and Hope in Jesus Christas Lord and Saviour whilst proclaimingCivil and Religious Liberty for all.Finally, it is my prayer that we will allhave a glorious day on <strong>the</strong> Twelfth as wega<strong>the</strong>r to celebrate our Culture. As we celebrate <strong>the</strong> <strong>323rd</strong> <strong>Battle</strong> this part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> realm.<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Boyne</strong> in <strong>the</strong> village this year we As you “lift up your banners” may you allcan recall those heroic deeds <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Rev. have a peaceful and pleasant day on <strong>the</strong>George Walker, <strong>the</strong> local Rector who in “Glorious Twelfth.”1689 was Governor <strong>of</strong> Londonderry during<strong>the</strong> siege but was later killed at <strong>the</strong><strong>Boyne</strong> in 1690.However, <strong>the</strong>se events were not <strong>the</strong> beginning<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> story, for that we mustlook to <strong>the</strong> year 1688 when on <strong>the</strong> 5thNovember, William Prince <strong>of</strong> Orangelanded at <strong>the</strong> fishing town <strong>of</strong> Brixam inDevon in Sou<strong>the</strong>rn England. In answer toan invitation to come to England, Williamhad sailed from Holland with 670 vesselsand flying on <strong>the</strong> mas<strong>the</strong>ad <strong>of</strong> his shipwere <strong>the</strong> words “I WILL MAINTAIN THE James A. R.A. Forbes was Deputy Master <strong>of</strong>LOL 30 and District Secretary <strong>of</strong> CastlecaulfieldDistrict No. 4 in 1879.<strong>The</strong> Lodge started to meet in a two roomhouse at Cullenfadd in 1879 and has met<strong>the</strong>re ever since. It was semi-detachedand both houses shared <strong>the</strong> same streetand entrance to <strong>the</strong> road. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>owners Bro. Richard Welton becameW.M. <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lodge for a number <strong>of</strong> years.At a meeting on 14th February 1910 itwas proposed by <strong>the</strong> W.M Bro. C.E. Bristowand seconded by Bro. RichardWelton that <strong>the</strong> hall be re-thatched andthat each member pay <strong>the</strong> sum <strong>of</strong> 5/- onlodge night in March.On <strong>the</strong> 4th June 1951 <strong>the</strong> Lodge got a licenceto fur<strong>the</strong>r extend and repair <strong>the</strong>hall.<strong>The</strong> re-opening <strong>of</strong> Cullenfadd OrangeHall took place on <strong>the</strong> 16th January 1952.<strong>The</strong> opening ceremony was performedby Bro. Sir Norman Stronge D.L JP <strong>of</strong>Tynan Abbey and MP for Mid Armagh.A new banner was unfurled at CullenfaddOrange Hall on Tuesday 8th <strong>July</strong>1958. It was unfurled by <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>n CountyGrand Master Major C.A.M AlexanderDL. <strong>The</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficers at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> Cullenfaddwere WM Bro. Mervyn Patterson, DMBro. Ernest Bristow, Secretary Bro. JamesLyttle, Assistant Secretary Bro. Noel Burrows,Treasurer Bro. David McVeigh andChaplain Bro. William McVeigh.In <strong>the</strong> years ahead from that date <strong>the</strong>banner started to show wear and tear,with membership decreasing it was decidedto purchase a new Bannerette.<strong>The</strong> unfurling and dedication <strong>of</strong> a newBannerette took place on Monday 17thMay 2010 at R.B.P Hall Castlecaulfield. Itwas unfurled by one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lodges SeniorMembers Bro. William Irwin Chaplain<strong>of</strong> LOL 30 at <strong>the</strong> time.<strong>The</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lodge at Present areas follows: Wm Bro. Aughintober Star <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong> North LOL 38<strong>The</strong> exact beginnings <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lodge in manry Units were formed across <strong>the</strong>Aughintober are, like many o<strong>the</strong>rs, country. One such unit was <strong>the</strong> Fort Edwardshrouded in <strong>the</strong> mists <strong>of</strong> time and due toso few records surviving we may neverknow all <strong>the</strong> details.<strong>The</strong>re were many Orange associationsand clubs formed during <strong>the</strong> 18th centuryto commemorate <strong>the</strong> Glorious Revolutionand <strong>the</strong> victory <strong>of</strong> William III overJames II. <strong>The</strong>se were on a local level andnot nationally organized. One such organizationin South Tyrone was <strong>the</strong> OrangeBoys Society formed, in 1792, byJames Wilson <strong>of</strong> <strong>The</strong> Dyan.Following <strong>the</strong> <strong>Battle</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Diamond on21 September 1795 it was decided thata more organized approach was neededfor <strong>the</strong> defence <strong>of</strong> Protestants andProtestantism and lodges were formed.Each lodge was to have a warrant and anumber, so when <strong>the</strong> men from Aughintobergot to Loughgall <strong>the</strong>y receivedNo 38. Legend has it that when on <strong>the</strong>irway <strong>the</strong>re <strong>the</strong>y met <strong>the</strong> Cullenfad menreturning with No 30. So in only a fewdays hundreds <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se lodges wereformed in Ulster and fur<strong>the</strong>r afield.In 1796, because <strong>of</strong> rising tensions and<strong>the</strong> threat <strong>of</strong> a French invasion, Yeo-Yeoman Cavalry which was basedin <strong>the</strong> Townland <strong>of</strong> Killymaddy. It wascommanded by an experienced soldier,Waterhouse Crymble Lindsay, one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Lindsay’s <strong>of</strong> Cahoo, cousins <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lindsay’s<strong>of</strong> Loughry. In 1798 <strong>the</strong>y formed alodge No 677 and W.C. Lindsay was <strong>the</strong>WM. <strong>The</strong> early Roll/Minute Book for <strong>the</strong>lodge was <strong>of</strong>fered for sale on E-Bay afew years ago and is now in <strong>the</strong> possession<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> GOLI.Several <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> visitors at<strong>the</strong>ir meetings were from members <strong>of</strong>LOL 38, who were also members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Yeomanry <strong>the</strong>re.In <strong>the</strong> early days <strong>the</strong> lodge met in <strong>the</strong>home or a barn <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Johnstonfamilies that lived in Aughintober. In 1862<strong>the</strong>y gained possession <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> old AughintoberSchool, which had been replacedby a new one built by Lady CarolineBurges at Parkanaur.This building served <strong>the</strong> lodge well, aswell being a base for <strong>the</strong> Ulster SpecialConstabulary from 1920 and for <strong>the</strong> UlsterHome Guard during WW 2, until1965 when plans for an extension wereformed. In fact work had started to clearaway and level <strong>the</strong> groundto <strong>the</strong> rear <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> hall whenBro Tom Doran arrived homefrom <strong>the</strong> US for one <strong>of</strong> his annualtrips. He took a look atwhat was planned and beforelong he had persuaded <strong>the</strong>members to move to a newsite kindly granted by Bro BobCuddy. Since <strong>the</strong>n manyboys have passed through its ranks,

It was born out was unfurled by Mrs. M.O Patterson wifeR.W.Bro. Jack Ashenhurst and <strong>the</strong> Banner<strong>of</strong> three local Lodges in <strong>the</strong> Village <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> late W.Bro. M.O Patterson P.D.M.Castlecaulfield, who amalgamated to <strong>The</strong> praise was led by Greystone Silverform one. <strong>The</strong>se were “Clonaneese True Band.Blues” LOL 69, belonging to Pomeroy <strong>The</strong> Late Lord Carson was depicted onDistrict LOL No 5, “No Surrender” LOL <strong>the</strong> front with <strong>the</strong> Bible and Crown on a266 and “Walkers Total Abstinence” LOL cushion with <strong>the</strong> cross sceptres on <strong>the</strong>324 both belonging to Castlecaulfield back. <strong>The</strong> Lodge again unfurled its currentBanner on 18th June 2004 when <strong>the</strong>District LOL No 4.<strong>The</strong> first Officers elected were: WM, <strong>the</strong>n Grand Master <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> G.O.L.I MostBro. S. Henderson, DM, Bro. W.R. Lucas, Worshipful Bro. Robert Saulters was inChaplain, Bro. Rev. Canon W.G.H. Williams,Secretary, Bro. D. Houston, Treasfurledby Mrs. M. Henderson wife <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>attendance and <strong>the</strong> Banner was unurer,Bro. R.D. Marshall and Lecturer, Bro. first W.M. Bro. S. Henderson. <strong>The</strong> praiseJ. Campbell.was led by Dungannon Silver Band. <strong>The</strong><strong>The</strong> Lodge has no Hall <strong>of</strong> its own as <strong>the</strong> Banner features <strong>the</strong> late Lord Carson onold Orange Hall “<strong>The</strong> Rev. A number <strong>of</strong> members <strong>of</strong>School was destroyed in an arson attack.<strong>The</strong> local Presbyterian Church on <strong>The</strong> lodge has a number <strong>of</strong> brethren who<strong>the</strong> Band are also members <strong>of</strong> LOL 45.<strong>the</strong> Main Street kindly <strong>of</strong>fered us <strong>the</strong> currently hold Office in <strong>the</strong> District; W.use <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir Church Hall namely <strong>The</strong> Bro. Keith Ferguson, District Master alsoRev. Joseph Acheson Memorial Hall for served as Secretary, Bro. Jim Kirk, Layholding meetings. William Coote, M.P., in <strong>the</strong> presence<strong>of</strong> a large company <strong>of</strong> brethren in fullregalia. Pipe and flute bands attendedfrom Caledon, Carricklongfield LOL 748,Rehaghey LOL 857, Brantry LOL 542,and Edentilone LOL 321. <strong>The</strong> hall, whichis over 30 feet in length, is well adaptedfor lodge meetings.Bro. William Coote, MP, in <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong>his address, congratulated Bro. W. S.Bennett, JP, WM, and <strong>the</strong> members <strong>of</strong>LOL 748 on securing such a fine hall –ano<strong>the</strong>r block- house for <strong>the</strong> defence<strong>of</strong> civil and religious freedom along <strong>the</strong>frontier. H. J.Bennett informed <strong>the</strong> meeting hehad made inquiries regarding aPortrait <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Rev. George Walkerto be presented to <strong>The</strong> Rev. GeorgeWalker, Killyman Temperance LOLNo. 397, No. 8 District Belfast. Aproper picture would cost <strong>the</strong> sum <strong>of</strong>£24, which would be painted by Bro.Bridgett, Packinham Street, Belfast.Bro. Gordon Duncan thought <strong>the</strong>price was ra<strong>the</strong>r high.Bro. Robert Paisley suggested <strong>the</strong>amount should be borne by <strong>the</strong> PrivateLodges, which was seconded byBro. Mervyn Patterson.Bro. George Walker, KillymanTemperance LOL No. 397, No.8 District, Belfast in <strong>the</strong> Rev. GeorgeWalker Memorial Hall, Castlecaulfield.It was proposed by Bro W. S. Rev. George Walker Memorial Arch was erected in <strong>the</strong> village sometime between 1935-39. An old minute book <strong>of</strong> “No Surrender” LOL 266 refers to village decorations in 1935and again in 1937 but an Arch is not specifically mentioned until <strong>the</strong> minute <strong>of</strong> 7th <strong>July</strong>1939, where it is recorded, “Bro. Jack Frizelle thanked all members for help given him toput up <strong>the</strong> Arch”.<strong>The</strong> current Arch was Opened and Dedicated on Friday 4th <strong>July</strong> 1986 in Castlecaulfield.<strong>The</strong> opening ceremony was carried out by Rt. W. Bro. Alan Rainey C.G.M, R.A.P.C. Co.Tyrone and dedicated by W. Bro. Rev. H.W. Ross B.D., D.C.G.C. Co. Tyrone o<strong>the</strong>r speakersincluded Councillor Ken Maginnis M.P., M.P.A. and Rev. Ivan Foster M.P.A.
