The Champion • Wednesday 18 December 2013CVisit us @ www.ChampNews.com • 5Showdown meetingon library’s futureReport by Tom MartinThe <strong>ship</strong>wreck wrapped around an Iron Man<strong>Model</strong> <strong>pirate</strong> <strong>ship</strong>found <strong>washed</strong> <strong>up</strong> onbeach to be repairedReport by Tom MartinA LIFEGUARD has described the moment hefound the remains of the Black Pearl driftwoodmodel <strong>ship</strong> on Crosby beach.Andy Jordon, 32, was doing his early morningroutine last week when he discoveredwreckage wrapped around one of AntonyGormley’s famous Iron Men.He then discovered it was actually theremains of The Black Pearl, which wasoriginally in New Brighton until a heavy storm<strong>washed</strong> it away earlier this month.The popular tourist attraction was created byartist Frank Lund and made from driftwoodand other materials found on New Brightonbeach.Andy, who works for the Royal NationalLifeboat Institute (RNLI), <strong>up</strong>loaded pictures toFacebook in a bid to attract the attention of the<strong>ship</strong>’s owners.And the idea worked as the remains have nowbeen collected and will be used to rebuild it.Andy, who lives in Kirkby, said: “My patrolstarted at 10am and I was with my colleagueRyan Jennings.“We usually just drive the full length of thebeach to make sure nothing is <strong>washed</strong> <strong>up</strong> thatcould cause a danger to the public.“I noticed what looked like a <strong>ship</strong> andsuddenly the penny dropped and I knew itmust be The Black Pearl.“It was wrapped around one of the Iron Menwhich was lucky because otherwise the tidewould have taken it back out to sea.”Amongst the wreckage was the steeringwheel, flags, rope and also the plaque with the<strong>ship</strong>’s name on.
