Data sheet Water pumps APP 11-131. IntroductionAPP 11-13 pumps are designed to supply lowviscosity and corrosive fluids under highpressure, eg. in seawater reverse osmosisfiltration applications and for high pressure saltwater pumping. The pumps are based on the positive displacementprinciple (axial piston design) whichenables a very light and compact design, andthey are designed so that the lubrication of themoving parts in the pumps is provided by thefluid itself. No oil lubrication is thus required. The pumps are supplied with an integratedflushing valve that allows the salt water to flowfrom inlet to the outlet, when the pump is notrunning. All parts included in the pumps are designed toprovide long service life, i.e. long service life witha constantly high efficiency and minimumservice required. The pumps are fixed displacement pumps inwhich the flow is proportional to the number ofrevolutions of the input shaft and the pumpdisplacement.1: Shaft Sealing2: Bolts for bellhousing3: Flushing valve4: Port plate5: Bleeding plug6: Valve/thrust plate7: Piston/shoe8: Cylinder barrel9: Retainer ring10: Swash platewith bearing11: Port flangewith bearing12: Drain plug13: Housing14: Springs2. Benefits • One of the smallest and lightest pumps onthe market.• Can be powered by a combustion engineprovided that a special coupling is used.• Long service life / no preventive maintenancerequired in the warranty period.• Generates insignificant pulsations in thepressure line.• No oil lubricant required.• Integrated flushing valve.• All parts of the pump are made of non-corrosivematerials, e.g. Duplex (EN1.4462/UNSS31803-S32205) and Super Duplex (EN1.4410/UNS S32750) stainless steel and carbonreinforced PEEK.• High efficiency.521B1215 / DKCFN.PD.013.E1.02 / 05.20123

Noise level The exact noise level for the APP 11-13 will soonbe measured.Generally, noise will be reduced if speed isreduced and vice versa. Use flexible hoses inorder to minimize vibrations and noise.Since the pump is typically mounted on a bellhousing or frame, the noise level must bedetermined for the complete unit (system).• Rigid mounting of the pump generates morenoise than flexible mounting• Pipe mounting direct to the pump increasesthe noise level compared to a flexible hose• If using a VFD the motors can produce highernoise values depending on the operationpoint. It is therefore very important that the motor/pump unit is mounted correctly on a frame withantivibration isolation to minimize vibrations andnoise. The noise level is influenced by:• The speed of the pump, high rpm create morenoise than low rpm521B1215 / DKCFN.PD.013.E1.02 / 05.20127

Data sheet Water pumps APP 11-1310. Filtration As water has very low viscosity, the APP pumpshave been designed with very narrow clearancein order to control internal leakage rates andimprove component performance. Therefore it isimportant that the inlet water is filtered properlyto minimize the wear of the pump. The main filter must have a filtration efficiency of99.98% at 10 µm. We recommend to useprecision depth filter cartridges rated 10µm abs.ß10>5000 (equivalent to a filtration efficiency of99.98%). Bag filters and string wound filtercartridges typically have only 50% filtrationefficiency. This means that for each 100,000 particlesreaching the filter, 50,000 particles passthrough it compared to only 20 particles in afilter with an efficiency of 99.98%.For more information on the importance ofproper filtration, please consult our publication“Filtration” (code number 521B1009), which alsowill provide you with an explanation of filtrationdefinitions and a guidance on how to select theright filter.11. Place the filter (1) in the water supply line infront of the pump.2. Place a monitoring pressure switch (2) - set atmin. inlet pressure - between filter and pumpinlet. The monitoring switch must stop thepump at pressures lower than min. inletpressure. Please see technical data (section 3)for specific pressure values.3. Install a low pressure safety valve or apressure relief valve (3) in order to avoidsystem or pump damage in case the pumpstops momentarily or is spinning backwards.Note: If a non-return valve is mounted in theinlet line, a low pressure relief valve is alsorequired between non return valve and pumpas protection against high pressure peaks.10 521B1215 / DKCFN.PD.013.E1.02 / 05.2012

Data sheet Water pumps APP 11-1313.3 RO system with APP pump1. Dimension the inlet line to obtain minimumpressure loss (large flow, minimum pipelength, minimum number of bends/connections,and fittings with small pressure losses).2. Place an inlet filter (1) in front of the APPpump (2). Please consult section 10, “Filtration”for guidance on how to select the rightfilter. Thoroughly clean pipes and flushsystem prior to start-up.3. Place a monitoring pressure switch (3) set atmin. inlet pressure between filter and pumpinlet. The monitoring switch must stop thepump at pressures lower than minimumpressure.4. Use flexible hoses (4) to minimize vibrationsand noise.5. In order to eliminate the risk of damage andcavitation, a positive pressure at the inlet (5) isalways to be maintained at min. inlet pressureand max. inlet pressure. Recommend to installsafety valve or a pressure relief valve (9) inorder to avoid high pressure peaks in case thepump stops momentarily or is spinningbackwards.6. For easy system bleeding and flushing, abypass non-return vavle (6) is integrated inthe APP pump.7. A non-return valve (7) in outlet can beinstalled in order to avoid backspin of thepump. The volume of water in the membranevessel works as an accumulator and will sendflow backwards in case of the pump stopsmomentarily.8. A safety valve or a pressure relief valve (8) canbe installed in order to avoid system damageas the Danfoss APP pump creates pressureand flow immediately after start-up, regardlessof any counter-pressure.Note: If a non-return valve is mounted in theinlet line, a low pressure relief valve is alsorequired between non return valve and pumpas protection against high pressure peaks.14. Service and warranty 14.1 MaintenanceDanfoss APP pumps are designed for longoperation, low maintenance and reducedlifecycle costs.Provided that the pump has been runningaccording to the Danfoss specifications, Danfossguarantees 8,000 hours service-free operation, however, max. 18 months from date of production. If Danfoss recommendations concerningsystem-design are not followed, it will stronglyinfluence the life of the APP pumps. After 8,000 hours of operation it is stronglyrecommended to inspect the pump and changeany worn parts, e.g. pistons and shaft seal. This isdone in order to prevent a potential breakdownof the pump.If the parts are not replaced, more frequentinspection is recommended according to ourguidelines.Pump shutdown:The APP pumps are made of Duplex/SuperDuplex materials with excellent corrosionproperties. It is, however, always recommended to flush thepump with freshwater when the system is shutdown.14.2 RepairIn case of irregular function of the APP, pleasecontact the Danfoss RO Solutions Sales Organisation.521B1215 / DKCFN.PD.013.E1.02 / 05.201211
