2008 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP®Bears Capture 2008 National ChampionshipThe <strong>Wash<strong>in</strong>gton</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>St</strong>. <strong>Louis</strong> men’s tennis team captured itsfirst NCAA Division III National Championship with a 5-3 victory overEmory <strong>University</strong> on May 15, 2008, at the Wallach Tennis Center <strong>in</strong> Lewiston,Ma<strong>in</strong>e.Sophomore Danny Levy cl<strong>in</strong>ched the match for the Bears with a 4-6,6-4, 7-5 come-from-beh<strong>in</strong>d victory over David Caplan at No. 3 s<strong>in</strong>gles.“I got down a break <strong>in</strong> the second set and cont<strong>in</strong>ued to battle back,”said Levy, who upped his career record to 43-9. “It was so <strong>in</strong>credible, andmy teammates were cheer<strong>in</strong>g loud, which helpedme out. Everyone on the team jumped the fence andswarmed me. It was a great feel<strong>in</strong>g.”The team of juniors Charlie Cutler and ChrisHoeland fell beh<strong>in</strong>d to Michael Goodw<strong>in</strong> and Caplan,4-0, at No. 1 doubles. Cutler and Hoeland answeredback with four breaks of serve and four holdsto post an 8-4 w<strong>in</strong>. The victory was the 25th of theyear for the duo.“It was not the start we were look<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>in</strong> doubles,”said Hoeland. “We f<strong>in</strong>ally started return<strong>in</strong>gwell and got a couple breaks and the momentum.”The Bears (21-4) made it 2-0 as junior NirmalChoradia and sophomore John Watts defeatedMark Boren and Hardy Ehlers at No. 2 doubles, 8-4.Choradia and Watts were 4-0 after be<strong>in</strong>g paired upon May 4 <strong>in</strong> the third round of the NCAA Tournament.Emory captured its lone po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>in</strong> doubles as OliverLopp and Michael Kaufman posted an 8-5 w<strong>in</strong> overthe freshman tandem of Isaac <strong>St</strong>e<strong>in</strong> and MaxWoods at No. 3. The loss for <strong>St</strong>e<strong>in</strong> and Woods dropped them to 9-2 lastseason, and snapped their four-match w<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g streak.<strong>St</strong>e<strong>in</strong> pushed <strong>Wash<strong>in</strong>gton</strong> U.’s advantage to 3-1 with a 6-3, 6-2 victoryover Col<strong>in</strong> Egan at No. 6 s<strong>in</strong>gles. The victory for <strong>St</strong>e<strong>in</strong> was his 13thstraight,improv<strong>in</strong>g his record to 16-2. The Eagles trimmed WU’s advantageto 3-2 as Oliver Lopp posted a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Woods at No. 4s<strong>in</strong>gles.Goodw<strong>in</strong>, ranked 20th <strong>in</strong> s<strong>in</strong>gles, evened the match with a 6-4, 6-3 upsetvictory at No. 1 over Watts, the top-ranked player<strong>in</strong> Division III. Goodw<strong>in</strong> also defeated Watts, 3-6,7-6, 6-4 at the UAA Championship on April 27 <strong>in</strong>Atlanta, Ga.Hoeland pushed <strong>Wash<strong>in</strong>gton</strong> U.’s lead to 4-3with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 come-from-beh<strong>in</strong>d victory overEhlers. The w<strong>in</strong> for Hoeland was his 11th-straight,and improved his overall record to 19-6.“That was a great match between two goodteams,” said seventh-year head coach RogerFollmer, who is 113-40 (.739) <strong>in</strong> seven seasons onthe Danforth Campus. “It was a great w<strong>in</strong> for ourprogram. We have come a long way and to be a partof history is great.
