The originalportion of the museum wasbuilt and paid for by theMendocino County HistoricalSociety during the 1960’s. The Cityof Willits offered the EastCommercial Street site on a generouslong-term lease. In June 1972,the Mendocino County Board ofSupervisors accepted the newmuseum as a gift from theHistorical Society, on the conditionthat the museum would be adepartment of Mendocino Countygovernment.
