This was publicly stated in August 2006 byGreyhound Adoption League spokesperson Lorri Tracy, who claimed as many as 500 greyhounds needed to beplaced:“There are so many dogs up for adoption all the time, the limited number ofgroups here can’t handle them all.” 110In 2006, greyhound trainer David Blair asserted that the large volume of dogs needing homes at Tucson is dueto the fact that trainers routinely send dogs to the track when they are unable to compete anywhere else:“If a dog can’t make it at a major track, he ends up here.” 111Similar public statements were made in 2006 by Geoffrey Gonsher, who was serving at the time as Director ofthe Arizona Department of Racing:“Based on the quality of the animals and the purse structure, I would say it’s notthe same park as others across the country.” 112Also in 2006, Arizona Greyhound Rescue President Mary Freeman referred to Tucson Greyhound Park as an“end-of-the-line track.” 113104 Josh Brodesky, 8 greyhounds die on trip, Arizona Daily Star, December 15, 2010.105 Ibid.106 Ibid.107 Becky Pallack, Alexis Huicochea, Trainer suspended in deaths of 8 dogs, Arizona Daily Star, June 24, 2005.108 Ibid.109 Ibid.110 Brodesky.111 Ibid.112 Ibid.113 Saxon Burns, Dogs gone, Tucson Weekly, November 9, 2006.Greyhound Racing in Arizona | February 2011 16
