According to <strong>the</strong>latest intrageneric classificati<strong>on</strong> it is divided into 15 subgenera <strong>and</strong> 72 secti<strong>on</strong>s. Thesubgenus Allium is <strong>the</strong> largest, comprising around 280 species, 114 <strong>of</strong> whichcompose its largest secti<strong>on</strong>, Allium. Although extensive research has been d<strong>on</strong>e <strong>on</strong>garlic <strong>and</strong> a few related species, <strong>the</strong>re was no comprehensive study <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong>significance <strong>of</strong> primary volatile <strong>and</strong> phenolic compounds in <strong>the</strong> tax<strong>on</strong>omy <strong>of</strong> garlics.With respect to this, <strong>the</strong> chemical compositi<strong>on</strong> <strong>of</strong> phenolic <strong>and</strong> volatile sulfurfracti<strong>on</strong>s <strong>of</strong> 10 taxa <strong>of</strong> secti<strong>on</strong> Allium, including A. sativum (namely A. rotundumsubsp. waldsteinii, A. scorodoprasum, A. sphaerocephal<strong>on</strong>, A. atroviolaceum, A.guttatum subsp. dalmaticum <strong>and</strong> subsp. sardoum, A. vineale var. vineale, var.compactum <strong>and</strong> var. capsuliferum) was studied. Cluster analysis based <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> mainphenolic (phenolic acids, flav<strong>on</strong>oids <strong>and</strong> anthocyans) <strong>and</strong> volatile sulfur compounds(different kinds <strong>of</strong> su lfides) pointed <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> closest relati<strong>on</strong> between A. sativum <strong>and</strong>three investigated varieties <strong>of</strong> A. vineale. Sec<strong>on</strong>d group made <strong>the</strong> examinedsubspecies <strong>of</strong> A. guttatum, joined with A. sphaerocephal<strong>on</strong>. A. scorodoprasum <strong>and</strong>A. rotundum subsp. waldsteinii presented <strong>the</strong> third group <strong>and</strong> A. atroviolaceum was,according to <strong>the</strong> linkage distance, <strong>the</strong> most distant from all o<strong>the</strong>r investigated taxa.18
