Fl. Carn. 2:65 (1772)) is aP<strong>on</strong>tic-Balkan-Caucasian species native to <strong>the</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>astern Balkans. It is comm<strong>on</strong><strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> territory <strong>of</strong> <strong>Serbia</strong>, especially in <strong>the</strong> Pann<strong>on</strong>ic floral regi<strong>on</strong>. It grows invarious habitats, most typically <strong>on</strong> grassy patches, pasture l<strong>and</strong>s, <strong>and</strong> meadows. Itstax<strong>on</strong>omic variati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> territory <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pann<strong>on</strong> Plain includes three variants <strong>and</strong>two forms. The variants differ in leaflet shape, whereas <strong>the</strong> forms are distinguished<strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> basis <strong>of</strong> flower hue.Using comparative morphological methods, we have carried out a tax<strong>on</strong>omic<strong>and</strong> variati<strong>on</strong> analysis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> large yellow vetch <strong>on</strong> individuals collected in threepopulati<strong>on</strong>s <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> territory <strong>of</strong> Novi Sad. The analysis c<strong>on</strong>centrated <strong>on</strong> more than 30morphological features in 30 individuals from each populati<strong>on</strong>. The features havebeen grouped into quantitative <strong>and</strong> qualitative categories. We have subdivided <strong>the</strong>category <strong>of</strong> quantitative features into measurement <strong>and</strong> calculati<strong>on</strong> subcategories. Both <strong>the</strong> quantitative <strong>and</strong> qualitative features have been statistically analysed with<strong>the</strong> Statistica for Windows ver. 80 s<strong>of</strong>tware package, relying <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> method <strong>of</strong>multivariati<strong>on</strong>al analysis. The preliminary findings have proved to be promising <strong>and</strong> may be fur<strong>the</strong>rverified by more detailed analyses still ahead. We have found completely newfeatures that are not menti<strong>on</strong>ed in <strong>the</strong> literature at all. Based <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong>se results, it maybe possible to describe a new variant <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> large yellow vetch. This new variantdiffers from those already described in leaflet shape, vexillum colour <strong>and</strong> size, aswell as seed colour.17
