10 th <str<strong>on</strong>g>Symposium</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Flora</strong> <strong>of</strong> Sou<strong>the</strong>astern <strong>Serbia</strong> <strong>and</strong> Neighbouring regi<strong>on</strong>s,Vlasina 17 to 20 June 2010taxa are identified <strong>on</strong>ly by larvae. This checklist should c<strong>on</strong>tribute in research <strong>on</strong>this unexplored group <strong>of</strong> insects in <strong>Serbia</strong> which have <strong>of</strong>ten proved useful in <strong>the</strong>assessment <strong>of</strong> water quality. Of <strong>the</strong> three tribes recognized in <strong>the</strong> subfamilyChir<strong>on</strong>ominae, all three occur in <strong>Serbia</strong>. The fauna <strong>of</strong> subfamily Chir<strong>on</strong>ominaecurrently c<strong>on</strong>sists <strong>of</strong> described 63 genera <strong>and</strong> described 445 (sub)species. The c<strong>on</strong>diti<strong>on</strong>s thatc<strong>on</strong>tributed to this variety are analyzed. The importance <strong>of</strong> geological history <strong>of</strong> thisregi<strong>on</strong> is explained, from <strong>the</strong> ancient lake phase trough <strong>the</strong> glacial epochs including<strong>the</strong> present state. The dilemma about lake terraces <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> water level <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Neogene lake system is discussed. A list <strong>of</strong> gorges, speleological objects, springs,mountain tops as habitats <strong>of</strong> endemic <strong>and</strong> relict species are given.
