Kaj je avtentičnodelo Andyja Warhola in kaj ni, danes določata podjetjiAndy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, Inc., in AndyWarhol Art Authentication Board, Inc., ki sta leta 2003izvedli precedens v zgodovini likovne umetnosti. Svetujejoart except for the signature. His works were now, for themost part, manufactured by his assistants, including GerardMalanga and Billy Name. Sometimes this was done evenso that Warhol conveyed his ideas over the phone; at theFactory, these works were referred to as art by telephone.Because he was raising questions that the ideology of artand the art market could not afford to ask, the artist had lostthe faith of dealers in art and cultural prestige. Just like inthe case of gigantic corporations in the music industry, infine arts, too, the person who determines whether or not awork of art is authentic is often no longer the artist. Whatis an authentic Warhol and what is not is today determinedby the companies Andy Warhol Foundation for the VisualArts, Inc. and Andy Warhol Art Authentication Board, Inc.,which in 2003 set a precedent in the history of fine arts. They determined that the signed and dated portrait Bruno BSelf-Portrait from the series Red Self Portraits, which Warholhimself dedicated to his gallerist Bruno Bischofberger inwriting and which represents one of the frequently reproducedWarhol’s works, is not Andy Warhol’s authorial work.Of course, there is the issue of profit in the backgroundof this story. The existence of the non-profit foundation –which was established after the artist’s death to be the arbiterin disputes over the authenticity of Andy Warhol’s works –depends, of course, on the sale of the artist’s works in its possession, which are worth approximately 500 million dollars. It is in the foundation’s financial interest to control the priceof Warhol’s works on the market and, of course, it is in theirinterest to make sure that as few authorised Warhol worksas possible exist outside the foundation’s possession. Beforethe Andy Warhol Art Authentication Board, Inc. beginsinvestigating the authenticity of a work of art, the ownersof the piece must sign a waiver giving up the possibility ofdisproving the foundation’s decision. The foundation is alsonot required to explain its decision; it is, however, mandatorythat a work of art that has not passed the authenticity23
