The biggest dealer – WALMART announced that fromJan.2005, all its first 100 large dealers shall use the RFIDtechnology in all packing box; from Jan.2006 they will be extendedto all selling goods.e-Commerce activity generated $ 1.5 trillion (10 12 ) in US, 2003. Itwas predicted that online sales in US will reach 3.2 trillion, andthat global sales will reach $ 6.8 trillion in 2004.One cannot discuss the impact ofICT without a deep understanding ofthe incredible pace of change !ICT should be an important technologyto support APCEAM activities:technical transfer and knowledge dissemination;information exchange and regional cooperation;cooperative project research;remote learning, training; andmutual trades on agricultural equipment, etc.Opportunities and ChallengesAdvances in China A strategy to lead National Industrializationbased on Informatization A National Informatization Quotient (NIQ)based on 20 items indexes is as anotherindicator to gauge the development of GDPA favorable condition was created to fosterICT industry and national informatization:‣ Rapid development of IT industries with 2-3 timesover the GDP increase rate‣ The annual increase of IT products manufacturingindustry reached 33.2 %‣ The annual increase of communication business intotal reached 36.7 %‣ There were rapid expanding the Internet access andtelephone communication:

It owesits success to the developments in microelectronics and softwaresystems through personal computers, linked to Internet; mobiletelephones and global positioning and geographic informationsystem popularization. It is already become common items inagricultural sectors in some parts of the world. More intelligentmachines and processes are becoming reachable based onanalysis of human behaviour. Multiple services were performed toidentify reason why ICT is not adapted as much as predicted inmany countries and rural areas. Reducing the digital divide indeveloping countries and various rural regions is a crucialchallenge. It should be worthy concern by the APCEAM in furtheractivities to promote the regional agricultural engineering andmechanization technology cooperation, and agro-industrydevelopment as well.Welcome toOlympics ofAgriculturalEngineering inGoldenBeijing !2004 CIGROct.11 – 14http://www.2004cigr.orgScientific Programs of 2004 CIGR, BeijingSESSION Iin conjunction with the 7th Inter-regionalconference on environment & water.SESSION II in conjunction with the 1st Technical Symposiumof CIGR Section VIISESSION III in conjunction with 1st Technical Symposium ofCIGR Section VII – (IT for Agriculture)SESSION IV: Conservation tillage and Sustainable SmallFarmingSESSION V:FORUM onEquipment & Facilities Technologies for ModernAgricultureDevelopment Strategy of ABE Discipline andEducationThank you!
