INFORMATION PACKAGEFOR PROSPECTIVE PHYSIOTHERAPISTSIN CALDERDALE & HUDDERSFIELDGENERAL INFORMATIONThe <strong>Calderdale</strong> & <strong>Huddersfield</strong> NHS Trust was established on the 1 st April 2001, with a revenue budget of £210million, employing over 7,000 staff <strong>and</strong> serving a population of 416,000. The Trust was awarded 3-star rating inthe NHS Performance Ratings 2005-2006. The Trust has also received positive CHI <strong>and</strong> Improving WorkingLives assessments as well as being awarded Investors in People accreditation. The Clinical Therapy &Rehabilitation Directorate achieved Charter Mark status in 2004.At the moment, most staff are employed to work either on <strong>Huddersfield</strong> or <strong>Calderdale</strong> sites, although there isscope to access rotations on both sites.<strong>Huddersfield</strong> sites include the <strong>Huddersfield</strong> Royal Infirmary; St Luke’s Hospital, Holme Valley Memorial Hospital,various community sites <strong>and</strong> educational settings.<strong>Calderdale</strong> sites include the new <strong>Calderdale</strong> Royal Hospital <strong>and</strong> locality-based outpatient sites, community sites<strong>and</strong> educational settings.Mental Health services became part of the South West Yorkshire Mental Health Trust in April 2002, howeverthere is agreement to maintain it in the <strong>Huddersfield</strong> junior rotation.All the staff within the Clinical Therapy & Rehabillitation Directorate work towards a set of st<strong>and</strong>ardsincorporated into our “Caring for You” document.GEOGRAPHYBoth <strong>Huddersfield</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Calderdale</strong> are situated on the edge of the Pennines. Communications are excellent withthe M62 allowing easy access to Greater Manchester, Leeds <strong>and</strong> West Yorkshire; M6 routes to Scotl<strong>and</strong>, theMidl<strong>and</strong>s & West of Engl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> M1 routes to the Midl<strong>and</strong>s, South East & North East of Engl<strong>and</strong>.Rail networks provide easy trans-Pennine access, with London only 2 hours away from nearby Wakefield <strong>and</strong>international airports at Manchester <strong>and</strong> Leeds/Bradford are easily accessible.Within Yorkshire, local universities are at York, Leeds, Bradford <strong>and</strong> <strong>Huddersfield</strong>.SOCIAL & LEISURE<strong>Huddersfield</strong> is the administrative base for Kirklees Metropolitan Council, which includes Dewsbury <strong>and</strong> Batley.The town centre is pedestrianised for easy shopping <strong>and</strong> most major chain stores have shops in the town. It isalso a thriving cultural centre. The town’s concert hall famed for its acoustics is home to the internationallyfamous <strong>Huddersfield</strong> Choral Society <strong>and</strong> Mrs Sunderl<strong>and</strong> music competition. The annual <strong>Huddersfield</strong>Contemporary Music Festival attracts visitors from all over the world <strong>and</strong> the superb Lawrence Batley Theatreoffers a varied dramatic programme. The Galpharm stadium is a major concert <strong>and</strong> sports venue.2


<strong>Calderdale</strong> boasts many musical activities, museums, cinema, theatre, arts & crafts <strong>and</strong> special interestsocieties <strong>and</strong> is home to the historically famous Piece Hall. Sports facilities are well provided for, including anew leisure centre offering discount to Trust employees. Within a few minutes from the town, you can reachremote Pennine moorl<strong>and</strong>s <strong>and</strong> secluded valleys. The Pennine Way passes through <strong>Calderdale</strong> <strong>and</strong> the 50-mile<strong>Calderdale</strong> Way offers a challenge to hikers.There are famous professional sports teams to cheer on in the area, for example, rugby league football teams,Halifax R.L.F.C. <strong>and</strong> the <strong>Huddersfield</strong> Giants R.L.F.C.. There are sailing clubs at a number of local reservoirs,hang- gliding <strong>and</strong> horse riding centres.The nightlife locally offers cosmopolitan restaurants, bars <strong>and</strong> theatres. For those who want to dance the nightaway, Manchester, Leeds <strong>and</strong> Bradford are a step away.PHYSIOTHERAPY SERVICESThe physiotherapy service forms part of the Clinical Therapy & Rehabilitation Directorate, which is based withinthe Medical & Elderly Division of the Trust’s structure. The Directorate was awarded the Government CharterMark in 2004 for excellence in public services.STAFFThe Trust employs more than 160 qualified physiotherapists in a range of full-time, part-time <strong>and</strong> job sharecontracts.HOURSFull-time hours are 37½ per week for new starters in the NHS. Existing staff moving within the professionmaintain pre Agenda for Change hours for the protected period. How these hours are worked depends on therotation.PAYNew starters commence <strong>and</strong> remain on current pay scales until their post is assimilated onto the new pay <strong>and</strong>grading structure (Agenda for Change).ANNUAL LEAVELength of Service Annual Leave & General Public HolidaysOn appointment 27 days + 8 daysAfter 5 years service 29 days + 8 daysAfter 10 years service 33 days + 8 daysON CALLAll new starters are invited to attend an induction day to on-call working. Following this there is a structuredinduction programme, which is individually tailored to meet each person ‘s training needs. This involves workshadowing the respiratory team <strong>and</strong> a senior clinician when on call.All the on-call staff are involved in maintaining their competency by following the national competencyframework. This is partly achieved by attending the rolling programme of in-service training <strong>and</strong> the twice-yearly3


espiratory update. HUDDERSFIELDWithin <strong>Huddersfield</strong>, physiotherapists are managed as part of 5 multidisciplinary teams:▫▫▫▫▫<strong>Musculoskeletal</strong> <strong>Outpatient</strong> <strong>Services</strong> - receiving referrals from consultants, GP’s, occupationalhealth, rheumatology <strong>and</strong> pain clinics. <strong>Services</strong> are located on several sites across <strong>Huddersfield</strong><strong>and</strong> in health centres <strong>and</strong> GP practices. We currently have 3 clinical specialists working in thisarea, including low back pain, rheumatology <strong>and</strong> knee problems.Physiotherapy Inpatient <strong>Services</strong> - based at <strong>Huddersfield</strong> Royal Infirmary, St Luke’s Hospital<strong>and</strong> Holme Valley Memorial Hospital provide services in the following areas: critical care,respiratory care including pulmonary rehabilitation, cardiac rehabilitation, orthopaedics,medical/elderly, oncology <strong>and</strong> some paediatrics. We have a clinical specialist in respiratory care.Paediatrics - mostly based at Princess Royal Community Health Centre.Rehabilitation & Wheelchair <strong>Services</strong> - based at Barton Rehabilitation Centre, Oakes VillaResidential Centre <strong>and</strong> via community based teams.Mental Health <strong>Services</strong> – to adult <strong>and</strong> elderly clients <strong>and</strong> learning disabilities.JUNIOR ROTATIONS4-month duration, including:▫▫▫▫▫▫<strong>Musculoskeletal</strong> <strong>Outpatient</strong>s - based at <strong>Huddersfield</strong> Royal Infirmary (including the gym <strong>and</strong>may involve hydrotherapy), St Luke’s Hospital <strong>and</strong> Mill Hill Community Health Centre.Orthopaedic InpatientsRespiratory Care - including ITU, HDU <strong>and</strong> general surgeryMedical & Elderly wards - including the Stroke Unit, acute <strong>and</strong> rehabilitation wardsMental Health <strong>Services</strong>Rehabilitation CentreSENIOR II ROTATIONS9-month duration:▫▫<strong>Musculoskeletal</strong> rotations including inpatient orthopaedics, gymnasium, rheumatology,hydrotherapy, services based in health centres <strong>and</strong> GP practices <strong>and</strong> the domiciliary service.Rehabilitation rotations including respiratory <strong>and</strong> acute medicine at <strong>Huddersfield</strong> Royal Infirmary<strong>and</strong> the Stroke unit <strong>and</strong> rehabilitation wards <strong>and</strong> outpatient rehabilitation at St. Luke’s Hospital.5


CALDERDALEThe new <strong>Calderdale</strong> Royal Hospital was completed in summer 2001. Built on the site of the Halifax GeneralHospital it replaces the three previous hospitals in <strong>Calderdale</strong>. Over £76 million has been spent on the hospital<strong>and</strong> it has one of the best radiography-scanning departments in the country, a modern forward-thinkingmaternity unit <strong>and</strong> several practice development units. The newly refurbished Learning <strong>and</strong> DevelopmentCentre allows all staff access to research facilities, on-line learning opportunities as well as a large stock ofjournals, books <strong>and</strong> other resources. On the hospital wards <strong>and</strong> in the spacious rehabilitation department, X-rays <strong>and</strong> test results can be accessed on computer via ‘PACS’ (Patient Archiving <strong>and</strong> Communication System).Internet access is also available within the department.Within <strong>Calderdale</strong>, physiotherapists are managed in:▫<strong>Musculoskeletal</strong> <strong>Outpatient</strong> <strong>Services</strong>:-Receiving referrals from consultants, GP’s, occupational health, rheumatology <strong>and</strong> pain clinics.<strong>Services</strong> are located in health centres, GP practices <strong>and</strong> <strong>Calderdale</strong> Royal Hospital. We currentlyhave 5 clinical specialists working in this area, including low back pain, rheumatology, knee,shoulder <strong>and</strong> A & E.Based at <strong>Calderdale</strong> Royal Hospital, providing services in the following areas: critical care,respiratory care, orthopaedics, medicine & elderly, rehabilitation (accredited as a PracticeDevelopment Unit), acute stroke unit <strong>and</strong> women’s health.▫Physiotherapy Inpatient <strong>Services</strong>:-▫Paediatrics:-Based at Laura Mitchell Health Centre, Halifax but also providing services to the ChildDevelopment Unit <strong>and</strong> wards at <strong>Calderdale</strong> Royal Hospital.▫Community Rehabilitation <strong>Services</strong>:-Community rehabilitation teams from health centre bases; Glenholme Rehabilitation Unit;Rehabilitation at Home Team <strong>and</strong> Intermediate Care Team. Community Rehabilitation recentlyachieved an NHS Modernisation Agency Award for services for older people.JUNIOR ROTATIONS4-month duration, including:▫ <strong>Musculoskeletal</strong> <strong>Outpatient</strong>s - based at The <strong>Calderdale</strong> Royal Hospital <strong>and</strong> in primary care in 4localities – South Halifax, North Halifax, Upper Valley <strong>and</strong> Lower Valley.▫▫Cardiovascular/respiratory - covers ICU/HDU <strong>and</strong> general surgeryOrthopaedic wards6


▫▫▫▫Acute medical & elderly wardsRehabilitation Ward – covering strokes, other neurological <strong>and</strong> general rehabilitationAcute Stroke UnitCommunity Rehabilitation – providing multidisciplinary rehabilitation in patients’ homes. Theservice is based in primary care in 3 localities – Halifax, Upper <strong>and</strong> Lower Valley. Ability to drive isessential for these rotations.7


SENIOR II ROTATIONS9-month duration:▫▫▫▫<strong>Musculoskeletal</strong> <strong>Outpatient</strong>sIntermediate Care – based at Allan House Health CentreCommunity Rehabilitation TeamsAcute Inpatients – including ICU/HDU <strong>and</strong> general surgery, orthopaedic wards, medical & elderlywards, rehabilitation ward <strong>and</strong> women’s health.NB: Because the posts are rotational, the base changes on each rotation. Travel from the base to home <strong>and</strong>vice-versa is not paid.SUPPORT & DEVELOPMENTAll staff receive a formal induction to the Trust <strong>and</strong> local induction to their work area. In <strong>Calderdale</strong> there is alsoa short induction to the Private Finance Initiative.All staff participate in the Trust personal development review process (PDR) agreeing service <strong>and</strong> personaldevelopment objectives on an annual basis. In addition, all rotational staff set <strong>and</strong> reflect on rotationalobjectives with a senior member of the relevant team. Staff also receive supervision following the Directorate’ssupervision policy.There is an extensive in-service training programme for all junior staff. Specific clinical in-service training takesplace in each team. Where training is relevant to a number of staff, it is often bought in <strong>and</strong> run in-house. Forall qualified <strong>and</strong> non-qualified staff, continuing professional development (CPD) is supported <strong>and</strong> encouraged.Secondment opportunities are available to Senior staff to further their personal development.The Trust, in its commitment to staff <strong>and</strong> organisational development, offers many routes to enhancingleadership development for both qualified <strong>and</strong> non-qualified staff members.The Directorate has a strong clinical governance framework with staff leading on <strong>and</strong> participating in work in allareas of governance.We offer support <strong>and</strong> development to those looking to enter the profession through undergraduate studentplacements.There are two Learning Centres at the Trust based at The <strong>Calderdale</strong> Royal Hospital <strong>and</strong> The <strong>Huddersfield</strong>Royal Infirmary.
