<strong>SAFE</strong> <strong>AS</strong> <strong>CHURCHES</strong>? 5 <strong>Conference</strong> <strong>Highlights</strong> Day 1: Thursday 21 st July 2011 (9am to 5pm) Dr Monica Applewhite Dr Applewhite has spent the past seventeen years conducting research and root-­‐cause analysis in the area of sexual abuse and assisting organizations in developing best practice standards for prevention and response. Dr Applewhite’s areas of expertise include screening and selection protocols, monitoring and supervision systems, internal feedback systems, policy development for the prevention of abuse, risk management procedures for those with histories of sexual offending, and internal investigation protocols in organizations. She has been involved in the development of four national programs, two for the Catholic Church (one beginning in 1999 and another in 2003), one for the Episcopal Church, and one for the Salvation Army. Dr Applewhite will be using both presentation and workshop formats at our <strong>Conference</strong> and dealing with a range of topics tailored to the needs of Safe Church Ministry practitioners. Another opportunity to hear Dr Applewhite: Monica will also be presenting on Wednesday 20 th July 2011 in Sydney. This day will be by invitation only, to all Safe Church Ministry practitioners cross-­‐denominationally (hosted by the Catholic <strong>National</strong> Professional Standards Committee, it will explore further material Monica presented in here earlier this year – more on this day soon). Thursday evening will be a relaxed opportunity to network with and support each other over dinner. Day 2: Friday 22 nd July 2011 (9am to 5pm) Presenters include: Dale Toliday (NSW Health), Hetty Johnson (Bravehearts QLD), Dr Gary Foster (Spiritus QLD), Dr Peter Powell (Pastoral Counselling Institute NSW), Tim Dyer (John Mark Ministries – Tasmania). Who is the conference for? Safe As Churches? 5 is a by-­‐invitation-­‐only conference, concerning Safe Church Ministry, i.e. God-­‐ honouring, abuse free, harm free, person-­‐valuing and respectful ministry to all people. It is suitable for all Safe Church Ministry related workers: as church authorities (heads of church), administrators, professional standards workers, child protection advisers, counsellors, Safe Church workshop presenters, risk managers (insurance), and children’s and youth ministry education program directors. If you have others in your denomination, diocese, synod, or Christian organisation, please contact us so we might invite them as well. Alternatively, copy them into this invitation and have them complete the attached Registration Form, including their relevant role and organisation. Registration includes the conference, morning and afternoon teas, lunches and Thursday dinner. Accommodation is available within walking distance. 2
