December 12, 2010Dear Parents and Guardians,Christmas is in the air and this week you will really feel it at EA. Tuesday features ourannual scrooge chapel with an all-star cast that reenacts Charles Dickens' classic Christmastale. See Paul Rosenberg in a stunning performance of scrooge himself and the surprisecasting of Matt Essman.Congratulations are in order for the singers and musicians that performed in the <strong>Upper</strong><strong>School</strong> holiday concert last week. It was a terrific evening of music with excellentperformances from all of our music groups. Also, check out senior Synae Allen's chapeladdress from this past week. It is a wonderful and personal poem about discoveringoneself. Synae appeared again in chapel on Friday as part of a group of eight students reflecting on theirexperience at the Student Diversity Leadership Conference.Our own IV Former Karen Christianson will appear on a national broadcast of From theTop on NPR, the radio showcase of America’s best young classical musicians, hosted byacclaimed pianist Christopher O’Riley. This episode will air locally on WRTI on SundayJanuary 2, 2011 at 2:00 pm. On the broadcast taped at First Baptist Church in Abilene,Texas, on November 16, 2010, Karen performs "Everyone Dance" by Calvin Hampton.<strong>The</strong> exam schedule is now available for the Fall semester exams in January. 3-D Design Class Visits Laran Bronze<strong>The</strong> <strong>Upper</strong> <strong>School</strong> 3-D Design class recently visited Laran Bronze, a Fine Art Foundry in Chester. This was aunique opportunity for students to witness the many processes involved with casting bronze sculpture. Studentswere given a thorough tour of the foundry and were taken step-by step through the "lost wax process". It wasexciting to see bronze sculptures by Louise Bourgious and large scale public art sited for center city Philadelphia.Laran is located in a 1929 warehouse building. Currently, it contains state of the art computer equipment, 3- Ddigital scanners, routers, and casting tools that support the historic technique of bronze casting. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Episcopal</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> is organizing the summer trip to China on June 11-26, 2011. Students will experienceChina’s language, culture, history and current social and economic development, and meet the Chinese people. <strong>The</strong>program will include visits to Beijing’s historical sites, Olympic venues, the Great Wall, Xi’an’s historical sites,Terracotta Warriors Museum, and the 2011 World Horticulture Expo in Xi’an. Participants will also visit EA’sexchange school, Northeast Yucai <strong>School</strong>, in the well-known historical city of Shenyang in the heart of NortheastChina. At Yucai <strong>School</strong>, participants will engage in a variety of activities including visits to Yucai’s campuses andclasses, round-table talks with Yucai students and teachers, sports and cultural events, excursions in and arounde city, and visits to local universities, business corporations, and ordinary Chinese families. Students will staythe with Yucai’s host families while in Shenyang to experience Chinese traditions and daily life.ALL <strong>Upper</strong> <strong>School</strong> students and rising 9th graders interested in China are encouraged to participate.Knowledge of Mandarin is not a requirement. We look forward to an exciting, educational, fun-filled, and safetrip with EA students as we build a global partnership for the 21st century.
