Mr. Drayer has established an estate gift of $5M, with aninitial seed of $250,000 in an endowment.Sponsored Research: Research accounts are controlled and maintained by theindividual PI's that acquire the funding. On overhead generating research, thedepartment receives an allocation determined at the time of proposal submission anddisbursed from a college account. At present, the department has no funds availablefrom this option; however, faculty have been successful in receiving small grants andcollaborative grants that do not generate overhead funds.The budgeting process for the <strong>University</strong> and College of Engineering is as follows:C. StaffingThe Provost provides the previous year Educational and General State Appropriationbudget to the Dean of each college in the Spring. This budget is for salaries andbenefits for staff and faculty for the college, departments and divisions. The budget isreviewed and returned with faculty and staff changes to the Provost and VicePresident for Finance.Annual faculty reviews are performed by Department Chairs and recommendationsfor merit pay are submitted to the Dean. The Dean provides Department Chairreviews and submits recommendations for merit pay for both Chairs and faculty tothe Provost.The operating budget for the College, Departments and Divisions are revised basedon submission of requests from the department and the College.Classroom, infrastructure, laboratory and research funds are budgeted through theOffice of the Provost with State Appropriated Higher Education Assistance Funds(HEAF). These funds are based on the College’s annual proposals to the Provost.Funds for enhancing research are available through two sources: (1) Return ofoverhead grant funds from research grants and (2) State funds returned to the<strong>University</strong> based on grant funds awarded in the previous legislative year.Scholarship funds are available through endowments in the <strong>University</strong> and the<strong>University</strong> Foundation.The department enjoys the services of two full-time staff members, a Senior AdministrativeAssociate and a Laboratory Manager. Their service to the department has a significant effecton day-to-day operations and the maintenance of a student-centered environment that is acomponent in the accomplishment of our program objectives. Training of staff is conductedon a regular basis by the Department of Human Resources. The department seeks to providea comfortable and interesting work environment that is supportive and appreciative and thisaids in the retention of staff workers. Both staff positions have extensive longevity.52
