The Senior Academic Advisor has over 8 years of experience in the advisement process forthe College of Engineering. The second Academic Advisor has 1 year of advisingexperience. Both are familiar with <strong>Lamar</strong> <strong>University</strong> and the College of Engineeringpolicies. They also have knowledge of <strong>Lamar</strong> academic programs and personnel external tothe College of Engineering. They report to the Dean of Engineering and interact with theChair of the Engineering Departments in a collaborative and supportive role. They haveknowledge of the lower division curriculum in the undergraduate engineering programs and afamiliarity with high school prerequisite courses and test scores recommended as preparationfor the engineering programs. The CEAO handles all prerequisite checks for all freshmanand sophomore level students. The office also employs two part-time student workers whoassist with routine clerical duties, answer phones, make appointments, and greet visitors.The College also provides proactive counseling to encourage students who may be bettersuited for other major to pursue those majors. The intent is to furnish counseling to studentsbefore they acquire a GPA deficiency which would ultimately prohibit them from completingany degree.The CEAO also maintains a system to obtain and report statistical student information bymajor and classification, including retention data for use in program planning and ABETaccreditation.Students are advanced to the electrical engineering program from the CEAO when they havecompleted a minimum of 51 hours of the common engineering core program with aminimum overall grade of 2.25. Please see the section below on Upper Division Advising.College of Engineering Cooperative Education OfficeA Cooperative (Co-op) Education program, in which the student spends alternate semestersat work and at study, is offered to qualified students in the College of Engineering. Thisprogram is administered through the Engineering Cooperative Education office locatedwithin the College of Engineering. Internship for work periods in summer terms only arealso offered. Programs are available for engineering and industrial technology students.Students must meet the eligibility requirements of the program which include a minimum 2.5overall grade point average and be at least a sophomore student in their respectiveengineering program. To remain in the program, the student must maintain at least a 2.5overall GPA and perform in a manner satisfactory to the employer and <strong>Lamar</strong> <strong>University</strong>.During each co-op work term, the student is required to enroll in a three semester hourCareer Development course and is considered a full-time student at <strong>Lamar</strong> <strong>University</strong>. Thiscourse is an engineering course, but is not part of the engineering degree plan. IndustrialEngineering and Mechanical Engineering co-op students who successfully complete threeCareer Development courses may receive credit for one three credit hour elective.In addition, students are required to post their resume through Cardinal Connect, a webbasedjob posting and resume referral service. Job postings are constantly updated throughCardinal Connect and students are informed of companies interviewing on campusthroughout the year. Job postings are sent to the Department Chairs as well as individual10
