THIRD PARTY VERIFICATION REQUIREMENT OF SS/SSIBENEFITS OF APPLICANTS AND HOUSEHOLD MEMBERS: [24 CFR 5.216]EIV does not contain SS and SSI benefit information of applicants for HUD's rentalassistance programs. PHAs should ask applicants to provide a copy of their SS and/orSSI benefit letter, dated within the last 60 calendar days, for each household member thatreceives SS and/or SSI benefits.If the family is unable to provide the document(s), the PHA will ask the family to requesta benefit verification letter by either calling SSA at 1-800-772-1213, or by requesting itfrom www.ssa.gov. The PHA will not send applicants to SSA offices if they do not havethis information. Once the applicant has received the benefit verification letter they willbe required to provide it to the PHA.The PHA will use the listed gross benefit amount to calculate annual income from socialsecurity benefits.MTW Program ParticipantsTo verify the SS/SSI benefits of applicants, the PHA will request a current SSAbenefit verification letter dated within the last 90 days from each family memberthat receives social security benefits.17-III.F. THIRD PARTY VERIFICATION REQUIREMENT OF SS/SSIBENEFITS OF PARTICIPANTS AND HOUSEHOLD MEMBERS: [24 CFR 5.216]SS/SSI benefit information for participants and household members, who havevalidated personal identifiers (the individual’s identity verification status in EIV isverified), is available from HUD’s online EIV system, which can be accessed byauthorized PHA staff at: https://hudapps.hud.gov/HUD_Systems.PHAs are required to use EIV to verify SS/SSI benefits of current participants andhousehold members.PHAs are required to print the EIV Income Report and confirm with the tenantthat the current listed benefit amount is correct. If the tenant agrees with thecurrent EIV-reported amount, the PHA will use the gross benefit amount tocalculate annual income from social security benefits.If the tenant disputes the EIV-reported benefit amount, the PHA is required torequest the tenant to provide a current (dated within the last 60 calendar days)SSA benefit letter. If the tenant is unable to provide the requested document, thePHA should follow the instructions under Third Party Verification of SS/SSIBenefits of Applicants and Household Members.If benefit information is not available in the EIV system, the PHA shouldfollow the instructions under Third Party Verification of SS/SSI Benefits ofApplicants and Household Members (section 17.III.E).Page 17- 8 Revised/Approved 04/08/10 (Eff: 07/01/10)
