DemographicsAlmost 40 per cent of the catchmentpopulation reside in the primarycatchment area of Greater Ballarat.Approximately 21 per cent of thepopulation reside in the secondarycatchment and 39 per cent reside inthe tertiary catchment.Key characteristics of the populationinclude:• a continuing decline in the numberof children in the catchmentpopulation. Each age group up to 10years of age is lower than for 2001(which is in turn lower than for theprevious five years);• a reduction in the population ofyounger adults, which is typical ofrural populations, as younger adultstend to move away from the ruralareas for tertiary study andemployment opportunities;• a decline in all age groups between25 and 40 years over the past fiveyears;• conversely, all age groups over 40years of age have increased;• increases in the population forgroups 10-24 years of age are due togrowth in Ballarat and BacchusMarsh; and• the proportion of the population 65years and over in 2001 was 14.8 percent. This is estimated to haveincreased to 15.9 per cent in 2006.Overall, the population is ageingconsistent with the ageing of thepopulation across rural Victoria moregenerally. The ageing of the catchmentpopulation is a significant factor in theincrease in demand for health services, particularly services that support andmaintain the health of the frail elderlyin the community.Nevertheless, there is strong growth inyounger families around the urbanfringe. The increased populationgrowth in this area represents overtwo-thirds of the total populationgrowth in the Grampians region. It is projected that the population in2016 will be 239,856 persons. Thisrepresents a projected increase of 7 percent, or 0.7 per cent per annum overthe next 10 years.Specialties at Ballarat HealthServicesAboriginal Hospital LiaisonAcquired Brain InjuryAllied Health Services:DieteticsExercise TherapyOccupational TherapyPhysiotherapyPodiatryProsthetics and OrthoticsPsychologySocial WorkSpeech TherapyBreast CareCardiologyCentre Against Sexual Assault (CASA)ChaplaincyCoronary Care Unit,Cognitive Dementia and Memory ServiceCommunity Health ServicesCommunity Nursing,Community Programs including:Adult Day Activity CentresAged Care Assessment Service (ACAS)Allied Health Domiciliary ServiceCommonwealth Carer Respite Centre –Carelink CentresDomiciliary CareHome and Community care ServicesHospital Admission Risk Program (HARP)Hospital in the Home,Linkages – Central Highlands CoordinatedCarePlanned Activity GroupsPost Acute CareRegional Continence ServiceRegional Palliative Care TeamRehabilitation in the HomeCritical Care UnitCSSDDentalDiabetes ClinicDiagnostic and Radiology (X-ray) Services:Ultrasound,CT ScanMRI,EEGECGBreast ScreenDialysisEar, Nose and Throat Surgery,Emergency Medicine,Endocrinology, including DiabetesManagementFalls and Balance,Gastroenterology,General Medicine,General Surgery,Gynaecology,Infection ControlIntensive Care Unit & Medical EmergencyResponse teamLymphoedema,Medical Oncology,Neonatal,Nephrology,Neurology,Maternity ServicesOperating SuiteOphthalmology,Orthopaedic Surgery,Otolaryngology,Outpatient ServicesPaediatric MedicinePain ManagementPalliative Care,Perioperative Day Procedure UnitPharmacyPlastic Surgery,Psychiatry including:Child and Adolescent Mental HealthServices,Acute Community and Inpatient Services,Aged Community and Inpatient ServicesRadiologyRehabilitation, (In-patient and Out-patient)Residential Aged Care,Respite Care,Safety LinkStroke Management,Stomal TherapyThoracic Medicine,Urological SurgeryWound ManagementBallarat Health Services Quality of Care Report 2007-08 6
