At the heart of the Triple-Lokproduct line are the finest raw materials and manufacturingtechnologies as outlined in Table C1 and discussed below. The Triple-Lok Body: Triple-Lok fittings are manufactured inover 65 configurations. Straight bodies are either cold formedor machined from cold drawn bar stock. The cold formingprocess ensures consistent dimensional tolerances, improvedmechanical properties and better surface finishes. ShapedTriple-Lok fittings are manufactured from a one-piece forgedconstruction. This forged construction eliminates the potentialleak path associated with multi-component brazed fittings.Triple-Lok steel forged shapes also feature an optimum combinationof hardness and toughness for high-pressure capability, minimal nose collapse (typical of sizes -10 and under) duringrepeated assembly and long service life, even under severeoperating conditions. The Triple-Lok Sleeves: Most steel Triple-Lok flare supportsleeves are cold formed and heat treated for an optimumcombination of strength and ductility. The largest size sleeves,-20, -24, and -32, are machined from high strength steel.Stainless steel and brass sleeves are machined from colddrawn barstock.Triple-LokFittingsCold FormedBodiesForged BodiesBar StockBodiesCold FormedNutsBar Stock TubeNutsCold FormedSleevesBar StockSleevesSteel Stainless Steel BrassASTM Type ASTM Type ASTM TypeA576 C1010/ — — — —C10081214/A576A182 316 B124 CA3771215A108 12L14 A479 316A576 C1010/C1008A108 12L14 A479 316SAE1020SAE1020B16B453CA360CA345A276 316 B121 CA335B16B453— — B111CA360CA345CA443CA444A108 C1137 A479 316 B371 CA694Table C1 – Standard Material Specifications forTriple-Lok FittingsNote: On request, Triple-Lok fittings can be furnished in materialsother than those shown above.Finish: Zinc with yellow chromate is used on all standard steelproducts. Stainless steel fittings are passivated. The Triple-Lok Tube Nuts: Triple-Lok steel tube nuts are coldformed, except in sizes –20, -24, and -32, which are machinedfrom cold drawn barstock. Cold forming increases the materialstrength and its fatigue properties, imparting high strength andlonger service life to the nuts. Smaller stainless steel nuts arealso cold formed while all brass tube nuts are manufacturedfrom cold drawn brass barstock. Most crimp swivel nuts arealso cold formed. How Triple-Lok Fittings WorkTightening of the nut clamps the tube flare between the bodynose (seat) producing a leak tight connection. This clamping onthe 37° taper provides a measure of elasticity to the joint helpingit to resist loosening under vibration. The clamping force resultsin a small radial load that tends to deform the fitting nose radially. The resistance of the nose to elastic deformation provides aconstant preload (similar to a lockwasher) keeping it tight. The clamping force provided by the nut resists the opposingforce of the fluid under pressure. The joint remains leak tight aslong as the clamping force is higher than the opposing pressureload. Properly assembled Triple-Lok fittings with appropriatetube will seal consistently under pressure until tube bursts.Sealing in Triple-Lok fittings takes place between two smoothmetal surfaces, the fitting nose and inside of the tube flare. Therefore, the sealing surfaces have to be smooth, free of anynicks, scratches, spiral tool marks, splits or weld beads. Seamlessor welded and drawn fully annealed tube is recommendedfor Triple-Lok fittings for ease in flaring and bending. Certaintypes of harder tubes that are not fully annealed may not besuitable for flaring due to the potential for immediate or longtermcracking of the tube flare.
