<strong>TABLE</strong> <strong>TENNIS</strong><strong>JOINT</strong> <strong>SPORTS</strong> <strong>HALL</strong><strong>CASE</strong> <strong>STUDY</strong>DEVELOPING QUALITY STRUCTURES TO SUPPORT AND SUSTAIN <strong>TABLE</strong><strong>TENNIS</strong> SCHOOL/CLUB LINKS IN WOOD GREEN HIGH SCHOOL, SANDWELLAt original Sports College designationin 1998, Wood Green High SchoolCollege of Sport, Maths andComputing decided to adopt tabletennis as one of its focus sports. A localclub, Leckie Table Tennis Club, trainedat the school but was looking for amore permanent home – this led to acommunity agreement between thecollege and the club.<strong>The</strong> school felt that table tennishad the potential to engage pupilsof all ages and abilities, as well asbecoming a focus for sustainablecommunity provision for all. Asustainable partnership approachwas required that encompassedschools, the club and expertise to tapinto various funding streams and, inparticular, the <strong>English</strong> Table TennisAssociation (ETTA).By 2010, staff from the school hadposts within the club and clubmembers sat on the Sports Collegesub-committee which was importantto create mutuality - this process hasbeen repeated in four of our othercommunity clubs.<strong>The</strong> club adopted the name WoodGreen Table Tennis Club, which nowhas over 130 active members andfields 16 teams in the local adultleague. Players in the league areaged between nine and 86 years ofage. <strong>The</strong> junior section competes inNational and British Junior leagues aswell as the National Cadet league. <strong>The</strong>school provides facilities and coaches forthe club and the club in turn providescoaches for the school and its partnerschools. <strong>The</strong> school has an open tablepolicy, every Wednesday; anyone cancome and play, advertised throughETTA and school websites. Participantsinclude whole families as well as seriousplayers looking for table time – thiswas run using a ‘Pay and Play’ scheme,providing a bridge to convert the socialplayer into a club player.Sports College and School SportsPartnership funding was used,alongside the expertise of the<strong>English</strong> Table Tennis Association, toestablish satellite clubs in the primaryenvironment to fund coaches,curriculum provision and to deliverafter school clubs. Club members alsoworked with schools to establish acompetition structure.<strong>The</strong> ETTA provided regional coachesto deliver coaching qualifications tojunior club members and teachingstaff, in return the school facilitiesare used by the ETTA for a range ofcompetitions, as a high performancecentre and regional/national meetingsand updates.Further information:Youth Sport Trustwww.youthsporttrust.org<strong>English</strong> Table Tennis Associationwww.etta.co.uk


<strong>TABLE</strong> <strong>TENNIS</strong><strong>JOINT</strong> <strong>SPORTS</strong> <strong>HALL</strong><strong>CASE</strong> <strong>STUDY</strong>ETTA supported a bid for £65,000to upgrade the school’s facilities inparticular providing outdoor tabletennis tables. Pupils can be seenplaying every day before, during, andafter school. <strong>The</strong> outdoor tables arepart of an active lunchtime strategythat has drastically reduced instancesof poor behaviour during the lunchbreak and consequently any fall outduring afternoon school.<strong>The</strong> school has also worked withETTA to fund a disability/clubdevelopment officer.<strong>The</strong> school’s talented players havea mentor and the table tennisprogrammes have been a greatmarketing tool to recruit pupilsinto the school. In 2010, two teamsparticipated in the British Juniorleague and both have been jointtop of their respective divisions and,at the UK School Games, the Clubprovided a team manager and nonplayingcaptain for the Midlands teamthat won all of the able bodied goldmedals. In total, the school has hadover 50 young people with nationalrankings in the last 3 years, includinga lead player who was selected for theEngland development squad.At the start of our programme we hada disabled pupil (cerebral palsy) whoplayed at school and joined the club,with her able bodied twin brother.Today, both are at university withthe disabled pupil studying a degreein Sports Coaching. She is currentlypart of the Great Britain ParalympicDevelopment Squad and won abronze medal at the Italian Open,her first senior international. She alsoplays and coaches at the Wood GreenTable Tennis Club, working with someof our younger players and also helpsout with an after school club.Currently the school has 45 Year 7pupils training regularly and 70 percent of Year 7 and 8 students achieveat least five hours of activity a week.<strong>The</strong> club is on a sustainable footing, hasachieved Clubmark status, has beennominated for the Sport & RecreationAlliance (formerly CCPR) Club Link ofthe Year and continues to grow.It is vital that we help tocontinue build our communitiesso that young people engagein activities both in and out ofschool time.
