AroundThe new school on campusContinuing its maturation as a comprehensiveundergraduate institution, the College hasestablished a School of Arts and Sciences. Dr. KeithBelcher, Professor of Biology and director of theLaboratory Sciences program, has been appointed deanof the new school.Dr. Belcher, who previously served as Dean of theSchool of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, earned hisPhD at the Medical College of Georgia and completedhis postdoctoral residency and fellowship at the MedicalCollege of Virginia.Dr. Andrea Wallace, Professor of Chemistry, servesas the inaugural chair of the Department of NaturalSciences. Dr. Wallace, who earned her PhD in Chemistryat Clemson University, was the College’s 2009-2010Adviser of the Year.Dr. German Vargas, Assistant Professor ofMathematics, heads the Department of Mathematics.He earned his PhD in Applied Mathematics at WichitaState University. Dr. Vargas was accepted to the NationalUniversity of Colombia at the age of 14 to complete hisBS in Physics.Dr. Carla Bluhm, AssociateProfessor of Psychology,chairs the Department ofSocial Sciences. She earnedher PhD in DevelopmentalSchool of Arts and SciencesPsychology at ColumbiaUniversity Teachers College in New York City. Dr. Bluhmis co-author of Someone Else’s Face in the Mirror: Identityand the New Science of Face Transplants (2009).Ricky Weaver, Associate Professor of English, is theinterim chair of the Department of Arts and Humanities.A national search for an incoming chair is underway.“This structure will encourage and promoteinterdepartmental and interdisciplinary activities, includingopportunities for faculty and students to work in moreintegrative ways on community projects and scholarlyactivities,” Dr. Phillip Mason, Vice President for AcademicAffairs, explained. “Additionally, it will more effectivelysupport the efforts of the faculty of each departmentthrough the leadership of the department chairs.”The changes were effective with the beginning of thefall 2012 term.Coastal Georgia in print...College President Valerie A.
