49. The Danish Stream Fauna Index is determined on the basis of indicator taxa andthe number of diversity groups in the total fauna sample (kick samples and handpickedsamples). The first step of assessing the quality class is done by assigning thesampled fauna to one of six indicator groups based on at least two specimens ofselected taxonomic groups found in the kick samples or one specimen found in thehand-picked sample, respectively. Additionally, selected species belong to positive(e.g. Baetidae, Nemoura) or negative (e.g. Erpobdella, Sialis) diversity groups, whichare added up and classified (four ranges in total) within the second step of assessment.Carrying-out both steps leads directly to one of seven quality classes, ranging from'unimpacted' to 'very strongly impacted'.Estonia50. The Estonian quality assessment of watercourses is based on the Swedish BenthicFauna in Lake Littorals and Running Water - Time Series method. It uses fourselected indicator metrics of macroinvertebrate diversity and distribution: Shannon'sDiversity Index, ASPT Index, Danish Stream Fauna Index and Acidity Index. Thismultimetric approach leads to an assessment of both watercourses (riffle areas) andlittoral zone of lakes, resulting in one of five quality classes. It is planned to use theratio between observed index value and expected reference value to indicate theextent to which bottom fauna conditions deviate from an undisturbed (natural) state.Finland51. Assessment is based on riffle/ rapid kick net samples with three replicates (Finishsatandard SFS – 5077). A multimetric method for assessing the status ofmacroinvertebrates has been tested. The system under preparation consists of severalmetrics, e.g. number of type-specific species, EPT taxons and abundance of indicatorspecies.France52. The Standardised Biological Global Index (I.B.G.N.) is widely used in monitoringprogrammes in France since 1992. Benthic invertebrates are usually identified tofamily-level, some groups to higher taxonomical level. The method embraces 138different taxa to determine the ‘total variety of the sample (t)’ split up into 14 varietyclasses. 38 taxa constitute nine ‘faunal indicator groups (GI)’, which are selected if78
