There isrevived demand for jackupsand semisubmersiblesbecause many of the oldjackups are obsolete. Thedemand for better andmore powerful equipmentis there, and we are in goodstead to get a fair share ofthe business.BL: While the status quois standard technology, are you concerned thatnew technologies suchas horizontal drilling forpetroleum, or fracking, will affect Keppel’sbusiness as the world’slargest producer ofoffshore marine rigs?CCB: We are alwaysconcerned abouttechnologies that disruptour business, but for themoment, we do not thinkthat this will impact us, asthere is a lot of controversysurrounding fracking due toenvironmental and healthconcerns associated with thetechnology.BL: Given that the costsof operating in Singaporehave escalated, wouldthis force Keppel tochange its structureor the way forwardgiven that 50% of yourworkforce is based inSingapore? Would youbecome more global andless Singaporean?CCB: Ultimately, Singaporehas a limited land area, and our offshore andmarine business is veryinternational because weadopt a Near Market, NearCustomer strategy. Thismeans that for offshoreand marine, we employa lot of people outsideof Singapore. It is very important to keep onimproving both productivityand quality to make thebusiness viable in Singapore.Because of our excellentlogistics and supply chain inSingapore, we are still verycompetitive in the offshorearea, particularly for jackups. In addition, the Singaporebusiness climate enablesbusinesses to functionprofitably even though costsare high. The key is to add value forour customers. For example,a rig or a ship requires a veryshort term turnaround, andthe best place to build itwould be in Singapore wherewe are able to offer this valueto the customer. The above interview highlightshave been reproduced withpermission from CNBC.‘Straight Talk’ with BernieLo features exclusive one-ononeinterviews with leadersin the corporate, political andsocial scene. keppeliteKeppelite I December 2012
