See Paragraph 4.5.1 for additional information on the Snippets option.A Snippet data sample contains amplitude data from the ‘footprint’ on the seabedilluminated by a single sonar ping. The number of Snippets in a swath is a functionof the number of sonar beams. For a SeaBat 8101 150° system, this numberis 101 (the Snippets mode is not currently available for the 210° system). Thelength of each Snippet depends on the operating mode (Uniform or Flat Bottom),the beam number, and depth. In the Uniform mode, the length of each Snippet is roughly proportional to therange to the bottom detect point of any specific beam. The Uniform mode may bemore useful when surveying a non-flat bottom or a bottom with numerous features. In the Flat Bottom mode, the length of each Snippet is proportional to the size ofany specific beam’s footprint on the bottom. There will be a greater range ofvariation between center and outer beams because the wider footprint of theouter beams results in longer Snippets. The beam to beam concatenation of the Snippets from one ping usually results in100% coverage of the seabed which is similar in spatial geometry to that obtainedby a sidescan beam forming method. In most cases, the Flat Bottom modewill produce better coverage.See Chapter 6, paragraph 6.3.10 for Snippet header and data formats.______________________________________________________________________SeaBat 8101 Operator's Manual 3-15 Version 3.02
