The semi-finalist may advance to finalist status by taking the SAT during the senior year and by meetingother requirements outlined by the National Merit <strong>Scholar</strong>ship Corporation.Freshman Academic <strong>Scholar</strong>shipThe Freshman Academic <strong>Scholar</strong>ship is based on a combination of your ACT score* and cumulative highschool GPA, and is available only to future <strong>Southern</strong> freshmen who have just graduated from high schoolwithin the past nine months OR who have taken no more than ten semester hours of college credit. A fulltimeload (12 or more hours) must be taken to be eligible for the scholarship. To find out how you canbenefit from this offer, call 1.800.SOUTHERN.The Student Transferring/Returning <strong>Scholar</strong>shipThe Transferring/Returning <strong>Scholar</strong>ship (STAR) is awarded to those students who have earned more than six hours ofcollege credit and will be taking a full-time load (12 or more hours) through the duration of the scholarship. Thescholarship is based on the cumulative GPA of all transcripts when transferring. For returning <strong>Southern</strong> students, thecumulative GPA is figured from the student’s record each January. <strong>Southern</strong> does not round up numbers for this scholarship.Bronze Circle <strong>Scholar</strong>shipSilver Circle <strong>Scholar</strong>shipGold Circle <strong>Scholar</strong>ship$1,500 with maintenance of 3.40-3.59 GPA$2,000 with maintenance of 3.60- 3.79 GPA$2,500 with maintenance of 3.80 and above GPASummer Ministries Leadership <strong>Scholar</strong>shipsThese scholarships are available to students who work during the summer at an <strong>Adventist</strong> conferencesponsoredsummer camp or in literature evangelism and then attend <strong>Southern</strong> during the next academic year.Enrollment Services will verify with the student’s employing organization that contractual obligations havebeen met over the course of the summer. A student who participates in multiple summer ministry projects iseligible to receive only one of the scholarships below. <strong>Southern</strong> will choose the larger of the two scholarships.The Literature Evangelism <strong>Scholar</strong>ship - Your summer earnings matched 50%, with a cap of $2,000.Summer Camp <strong>Scholar</strong>ship - $140 per full week worked, with a cap of $1,680. To apply for the campscholarship, your camp director must submit the number of weeks youwill work based on your camp contract to the Enrollment Services Officeby March 1. This information is needed early for budgeting and awarding.Endowment Fund and Other Grants<strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Adventist</strong> <strong>University</strong> is blessed with a growing endowment fund created by donors interested inhelping students achieve their educational goals. Eligibility for this free grant money is determined by fillingout the federal financial aid application referred to as the FAFSA. This application uses a common nationwideformula to determine a family’s ability to pay for college. <strong>Southern</strong> uses this formula as a guideline in disbursingthe <strong>Southern</strong> Endowment Fund. To file for financial aid, go on-line at www.fafsa.ed.gov.Cut Your Costs by Paying the Year in Advance<strong>Southern</strong> offers a 5% discount if payment for the full year’s tuition is made by cash or check and a 3% discountif payment is made by credit card or Parent Plus Loan. To find out what that amount would be for your familyafter financial aid is applied, call 1.800.SOUTHERN.Departmental <strong>Scholar</strong>shipsSome departments/schools offer scholarships for students who meet departmental criteria. These scholarshipsare normally awarded to sophomores, juniors, and seniors who have performed up to certain levels in thedepartment. <strong>Scholar</strong>ships are usually awarded at Awards Chapel in April of each academic year. Check withthe department of your major for more information.Student Missionary/Task Force <strong>Scholar</strong>shipStudent Missionary/Task Force <strong>Scholar</strong>ships are available to qualified students who attend <strong>Southern</strong> the yearfollowing their term of service. Performance <strong>Scholar</strong>shipsEach year performance scholarships are awarded by the School of Music (for the Orchestra, theWind Symphony, and the choirs), the Gym-Masters, and the Destiny Drama Company. Some ofthese performance scholarships are by audition only. The scholarships may be renewable for eachyear the student is in college as long as participation in the performing group continues. For moreinformation, call the School of Music at 423.236.2880, the Gym-Masters director at 423.236.2673,or the Destiny Drama Company coordinator at 423.236.2787.<strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Scholar</strong>s Honors Program <strong>Scholar</strong>shipsThe <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Scholar</strong>s Honors Program is designed to enrich the studies of academically motivatedstudents. Students who participate in <strong>Southern</strong> <strong>Scholar</strong>s for at least a year are eligible for 12 hoursof tuition rebates, which are distributed over four semesters of their junior and senior years. Check out resources inyour hometown by contacting the public library, the local Chamber of Commerce, and your pastor.You can also access scholarship and financial aid information on the Internet at www.finaid.org. Thereare several searchable databases of more than 180,000 private scholarships, fellowships, grants, and loans.Cut Your Costs by WorkingWorking is another great way to reduce the cost of your college education. On average, students can contributeabout $2,500 toward their yearly costs by working 15 and 20 hours a week.Pl e a s e Ta k e No t e• Applicants for admission and financial aid will be awarded scholarships on a first-come, firstservedbasis until <strong>Southern</strong> scholarship funds are depleted. Plan ahead and submit yourapplications as early as possible.• All scholarships are divided and distributed equally over the fall and winter semesters.<strong>Scholar</strong>ships are not applicable for summer sessions.• For students who apply for and qualify for federal financial aid, determination of the totalamount of scholarships given by <strong>Southern</strong> is guided by federal guidelines. <strong>Southern</strong> is notallowed to “overaward” a student who has applied for federal aid. In some cases, students whoqualify for multiple scholarships may only be eligible to receive a portion of their awards,based on the federal formulas for awarding.• <strong>Scholar</strong>ships and awards, including employer tuition assistance and National Merit<strong>Scholar</strong>ships, cannot exceed costs for tuition (for 12 to 16 hours), general fees, room rent,and a capped amount for books and food. All outside grants and subsidies will be appliedbefore <strong>Southern</strong> scholarships and awards.
