association who created the necessary conditions for the involvement of studentsand postgraduate students in the solution of the research plan.The following chapters comprise a detailed description of the solution of individualprojects associated in the research plan. With respect to the wide thematicscope of these projects, individual sections of the documents were drawnup by different authors and the reader may therefore consider this documentrather as a collection of papers related to a particular topic.We consider necessary to mention the difficulties in the financing of the researchplan. Even despite positive evaluation during the opposition proceduresheld in January 2002, and in spite of the positive assessment of the CESNET2network by the international organization TERENA during its comparison ofacademic networks (June 2002), the financing of the research plan has not beensafeguarded until now. We are convinced that finally, we will be able to gatherthe funds required. However, due to some delays in financing, some projectswill have to be postponed until the second half of the year, which may have anegative impact on the quality of the research plan solution in 2003.10 High-speed National Research Network and its New Applications 2002
2 Brief SummaryThe research plan titled High-speed National Research Network and Its New Applicationsincludes the following fundamental objectives:• To operate a high-speed national research network, CESNET2,• To ensure its further development, in line with the needs of users and currenttechnologies,• To become involved in analogous projects at European and global levels,• To carry out own research in network technologies and their application,• To search for, adapt and develop corresponding applications.A specific aspect of this research plan is that it has, to a great extent, the characterof a service. Most of the finances are invested in the operation and developmentof communication infrastructure for science, research and education. Theresults are beneficial to a number of other projects and activities not directlyassociated with this research plan, which are, however, based on the automaticexpectation of an existing adequate communication infrastructure.Concerning the broad range of the research plan, the activities related to itssolution were divided into thematically defined projects. The 2002 projects canbe divided into the following three categories:Strategic: Themes which we consider to be key themes for the solution of theresearch plan. Strategic projects were among the most extensive, bothconcerning the volume of work and the investments.International: The association succeeded in becoming involved in severalprojects at a European level. In particular, these are the GÉANT, Data-Grid, SCAMPI and 6NET projects. We joined the last of the projects onlyin 2002 (it was solved within the strategic project concerning IPv6).Other: Projects of smaller scope, without any international bonds to otherinstitutions.The remainder of this chapter includes a brief summary of the activities andoutcomes of individual projects. For more detailed information, see the followingchapters.2.1 Operation of CESNET2 NetworkDuring 2002, the stability of the backbone network improved.
