Social benefits of <strong>Renewable</strong> <strong>Energy</strong><strong>in</strong> <strong>Worcestershire</strong>7.1 <strong>Renewable</strong> energy can br<strong>in</strong>g realbenefits to local communities. Althoughthe capital cost of <strong>in</strong>stall<strong>in</strong>g somerenewable energy technologies can behigh, the runn<strong>in</strong>g costs - especially ofw<strong>in</strong>d, water and solar technologies - canbe lower than conventional fossil fuels.Whilst be<strong>in</strong>g primarily an economicbenefit, this can help reduce fuel poverty.Grant assistance can further help to makerenewables more f<strong>in</strong>ancially attractive.Further <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation on grants is providedat Appendix H.7.2 Community ownership or<strong>in</strong>vestment <strong>in</strong> renewable energy<strong>in</strong>stallations can provide benefits to localpeople 20 . By sett<strong>in</strong>g up an energy supplycompany (ESCO), residents local to theproposed development can directly <strong>in</strong>vest<strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>stallation, help<strong>in</strong>g to fund design,construction and runn<strong>in</strong>g costs. In return,<strong>in</strong>vestors are eligible <strong>for</strong> a share <strong>in</strong> anyprofits generated by the sale of renewableenergy.7.3 Encourag<strong>in</strong>g young people to takea responsible attitude towards susta<strong>in</strong>abledevelopment is seen as crucial <strong>in</strong>combat<strong>in</strong>g climate change.<strong>Worcestershire</strong> County Council'sEducation <strong>for</strong> Susta<strong>in</strong>able Development(ESD) team works across the County'sschools to communicate the need <strong>for</strong>,among other th<strong>in</strong>gs, renewable energy.The ESD team have stated that:"<strong>Worcestershire</strong> County Councilrecognises that climate change andenergy is the greatest threat fac<strong>in</strong>gus <strong>in</strong> the 21st century.
