November 2010Dear Valued Benefits Administrator:I am writing to let you know about updates we are making to the Select Drug Program ® formulary,and our safe prescribing procedures.UPDATES TO THE FORMULARYUnless otherwise noted, we will make the following updates to our list of approved drugs, orformulary, as of January 2011:• Added new generic drugs. We added generic drugs as soon as they became available in themarketplace.• Added new brand drugs. We added brand drugs to the formulary, all of which have beenapproved by the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee as formulary drugs.The Select Drug Program formulary includes all covered generic drugs and some brand drugs thathave been selected for their medical effectiveness, safety, and value. The FutureScripts ® Pharmacyand Therapeutics Committee, whose members include practicing physicians and pharmacists fromthe area, regularly reviews the formulary and safe prescribing procedures to ensure their continuedeffectiveness.You can view the Select Drug Program Formulary online by visiting www.amerihealthexpress.com.SAFE PRESCRIBING PROCEDURESWe take several actions to make sure that prescription drugs are used properly and are not overused.One measure is to require prior authorization before certain drugs are available to our members.This means that a doctor must submit a prior authorization request before a member starts treatmentwith these drugs.Details about the recent changes we made to the formulary are outlined in the enclosed document.COMMUNICATING TO MEMBERSAll members with Select Drug Program coverage will be notified of these changes in the nextedition of Update magazine. Comprehensive Major Medical members who do not receive Updatewill receive a letter notifying them of these changes. A copy of the changes is enclosed for yourreference.-over-
