It was presented to the PeruvianMarine Institute and written in a form intended forcirculation to non-experts in stock assessment. It isa follow-up of work reported on by Saetersdal andValdivia (1964) and by Saetersdal et a1 (1965).THE FISHING EFFORT AND THE CATCHThe Fleet and Its CapacityTable 1 shows the number of vessels that has operatedduring the whole years 1959-1963 and during thefirst part of 1964. Table 2 shows the distribution byholding capacity and the estimated total capacity ofthe fleet. The number of vessels increased by 60%from 1962 to 1963 and the capacity increased bynearly 80%.
