ALEGRElnstituto del Mar del Per6lima, Pert?INTRODUCTIONThis report presents the results of an analysis madein September 1964 of all data then available on thePeruvian anchovy. It was presented to the PeruvianMarine Institute and written in a form intended forcirculation to non-experts in stock assessment. It isa follow-up of work reported on by Saetersdal andValdivia (1964) and by Saetersdal et a1 (1965).THE FISHING EFFORT AND THE CATCHThe Fleet and Its CapacityTable 1 shows the number of vessels that has operatedduring the whole years 1959-1963 and during thefirst part of 1964. Table 2 shows the distribution byholding capacity and the estimated total capacity ofthe fleet. The number of vessels increased by 60%from 1962 to 1963 and the capacity increased bynearly 80%.
