2012 HCAC Composite ScheduleHome games in boldMountMountat Mountat MountMountat Mountat MountMount2012 Season OutlookThe Lions are coming off a 6-4 season from a year ago, that included a 5-3HCAC record and a four-way tie for second place in the conference standings.Mount Head Coach Rod Huber’s team, however, was awarded second place dueto the tie-breaker. The Mount, which has produced a .500 or better record for10 straight seasons (2002-2011), with five seasons of nine wins during thatspan has set its goal as the same for this season as they have during everyseason of Head Coach Rod Huber’s tenure at the Mount. The Mount has set its sights again on winning the HCAC and getting back tothe NCAA Division III Playoffs. The Lions, who have made the national playoffsfive times in the school’s history (2004-2007, 2009), have won the conferencetitle four times under Huber (2004-2006, 2009) and are the only team inthe HCAC to have a three-year title win streak. This season’s HCAC Coaches’Preseason Poll found the Mount picked for second place in the conference, behind last season’s champion Franklin College. The Grizzlies have won thelast two conference titles.“Our goal every year is to win the HCAC and this year is no different,’’ Hubersaid. “We got better last year and we went into the off-season with a chip onour shoulder after finishing second in 2011. We feel that between two to fourplays per game was the difference last season in the games we lost.“Everyone is chasing Franklin this season and we are one of those teams. We believe we can win the HCAC this season. We’re looking forward to theHCAC games, and the new coaches there, as well as our continued gamesagainst area rivals Wilmington College and Thomas More College. We feel wehave a well-rounded schedule.”Of the eight teams the Mount will face in conference play this season, theLions have .500 or better marks against six of them, including a 13-3 alltimerecord against Manchester University and a 15-7 mark against BlufftonUniversity. The Lions are 8-8 all-time against Franklin, after suffering a12-point loss last season to the Grizzlies. The Mount’s other two losses inthe conference last fall were to Defiance College (by 10 points) and to Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (by six points).Huber said in order for the Lions to reach their goals they’ll have to dothree things. Take better care of the ball on offense (not commit turnovers),run the ball well, and play a sound defense (not give up the big play). On offense Huber will turn to a new offensive coordinator this fall, SteveBarrows, to call the plays and get the Lions on the scoreboard. Barrows isa former head coach from HCAC-opponent Anderson University and Huberis expecting him to help direct an experience core of offensive players. TheMount scored 262 points in 10 games last season.“We have simplified the playbook this season and we will be more a ofball-control offense,’’ Huber states. “We want to get our playmakers moretouches of the ball. We’ll run a pro-style offense with an emphasis on the rungame. We will, though, have a vertical passing attack that will look to takeadvantage of our opponent’s secondary.”The Mount returns six starters on offense this season, including skilledposition players Brian Pitzer, at quarterback; James Clay, at running back, andRob Blundred, at tight end. Pitzer is expected to enter preseason camp asthe number one signal caller, after completing 87-of-180 passes for eight TDsand 1,042 yards last season. He also gives the Lions a strong running threatat the position, finishing second on the team in 2011 with 721 yards rushingand five scores. Clay, a preseason All-American candidate (BSN) this season, was a First Team All-HCAC honoree last fall after rushing for 1,132 yards with16 touchdowns. Clay also is the team’s top returning receiver, recording 16receptions in 2011. Blundred, who gives the team excellent size and strengthat the tight end spot (6-foot-6, 255- pounds) is expected to be utilized morein the passing game this season after collecting nine receptions last season.Blundred was a Second Team All-HCAC selection in 2011.16COLLEGE OF MOUNT ST. JOSEPH

Among other skilled players back for the Mount this season who are expectedto play a key role in the offense are: running back Cody Meade, fullback MikeKlekotka, wide receiver Nick Kaminsky, wide receiver Tyler Feine, and widereceiver Jake Koopman. Quarterbacks Trey McPhail, who played in seven gameslast season, and Jason Stinebaugh will also push for playing time. The Lions have only one starter back on the offensive line, Andrew Wilson, but many of whom that figure to push for a starting spot and back-up roles sawaction during the 2011 season. Huber added that he is looking for junior TylerBreh and senior Matt Ray, among others, including those that played on the JVteam last season, to step up and provide the team solid play. The Lions allowedonly 12 sacks in their eight HCAC games last season. The Mount was first inthe HCAC last season in rushing yards per game, and finished third overall onoffense in the HCAC.Barrows liked what he saw during the team’s spring practices and is excitedto get the fall practices started in preparation of the 2012 season. He knowsthe team has some solid skilled players back this season, a good group ofback-ups from last season that will push for playing time this fall, and somenewcomers that could make a difference.Barrows said that among others that are back for the Mount this seasonwho could contribute on offense are: quarterback Brett Durbin, wide receiversJoe Lowe, wide receiver Christian Compton, tight end Rashad Billings, linemanBrandon Keller, lineman Phil Wiehe, lineman Jacob Howarth and fullback MattHans.“Our offensive line coach (Charlie Carpenter) and tight ends coach (AdamSayer) do a really great job with all of these players they have,’’ Barrows adds.“It will be a good group to have and work with and I’m excited about it.“I told our quarterbacks we have to be more consistent this season, and thatI’m looking for first downs and touchdowns from them. Our receivers look good. We’ll want to spread the ball around and take advantage of what the defensegives us.”Barrows said he knows somewhat the type of talent he will have coming infor him this season, based on 2011 statistics and action, as well as their playbefore him in the spring. But he added that he would give every single player achance of proving themselves anew this fall for the 2012 campaign.Defensively the Lions have five starters back, including two each on thedefensive line and in the line backing corps. Leading the charge up front willbe Sean Brooks and Russell Turner II. Both were named Second Team All-Conference last fall and are equally adept at stopping the run and getting tothe quarterback. Turner was fourth on the team last season with 47 tackles, including 11.5 for loss yards, and he added two sacks. Brooks was the Lions’fifth-highest tackler, with 39 stops, including 12.5 for loss yards, and hechipped in four sacks.“We will play a 30-front with the ability to move to a 4-3,’’ Huber said. “We’llfocus on being a run-stopping defense and not to give up the big play, eitherby run or by the bomb.”Huber will rely on veteran coach Ron Corradini Sr., and first-year coach GregHuster to direct the Mount’s defense this season. The Mount was third overallin the HCAC last season on defense, including ranking first against the run.“Well try to build on what we were able to do last season,’’ Corradini states.“We want to make the other team earn everything they get and we think we’llhave some good players that will help us again this season.”Corradini gave a lot of credit for the team’s overall speed and strength, tothe Mount’s Director of Strength and Conditioning Brent Rogers. The bettercondition any athlete is in allows him to be on the field more, which helps theteam overall. Coach Huber agrees.“Having Brent Rogers is making a major difference in our program,’’ Huberadds. “The players have bought into what he’s selling and we’re getting bigger, stronger and faster every year. He has done a tremendous job at getting theplayers on board and training them for the upcoming season.”Corradini, the Lions’ veteran coach, says the Lions will take advantage of theskilled players he will have on defense this fall. He wants the team to be solidagainst the run and the pass, and make big plays along the way.“We have some good, all-around players at a number of positions,’’ Corradiniadds. He states that returning defensive linemen Matt Gatherwright, Ben Mocahbeeand Bobby Grogan, among others, will also add to the Lions’ D-line depth.Leading the way at linebacker will be Konnor Blevins, who will call thesignals for the defense in 2012. Blevins is the team’s leading returning tackler, after making 64 stops last season, including seven for loss yards. Blevins ledthe Mount with four interceptions last season and he also had two fumblerecoveries. Among other returners, mentioned by Corradini, that will see timeat linebacker this fall are: Juan Gomez, Adam Bigelow, Joe Dolak, CameronDierig, Kyle Hazlett, Brent McCleerey, David Brausch and Garrett Breiner.Joe Frakes also returns to the Lions this fall after a medical redshirt lastfall and will be moved to strong safety. He will provide veteran leadership andstrong play along with starting returner Tyler Elrod this season in the defensivebackfield.Corradini is also pleased with what he sees coming back for the team in thesecondary. In addition to Frakes and Elrod, the Lions are expected to count onreturners Ralphael Allen, Samuel Fowler, Mike Tepe and Bobby Sagers as well asa couple of transfers, this season.“I’ve had two springs with these guys and a full season,’’ Corradini says.“They all play hard; you know what strengths they have and how to takeadvantage of those strengths. We are deep at some positions and we haveexcellent coaches with these players. We’re hoping to have a really good seasonthis fall.”As for the Lions special teams, Corradini, who will coach that group, hasback some experience and talent in punter Greg Tabar; and kickers DanielDripps and Tyler Calvert, Clay, who was the team’s top kick and punt returnerlast season, and Blevins, who will long snap this season, among others also willadd to the special teams.“We want to put players with a high level of skill on the return and coverageteams,’’ Huber adds. “We want our best players to be able to handle the ball.”Tabar was fourth in the HCAC last season in average yards per punt whileClay was second in kick return average in HCAC games in 2011.“Our special teams will need to be more consistent this season, but weshould have good cover and protection teams’’ states Corradini. “We’ll haveplayers on special teams that are good players and ones you can trust to takecare of things.”Huber adds the additions of Barrows and Huster to the coaching staff thisseason, as well as the rest of the team’s returning coaches and first-yearcoaching staff members, are a solid group of leaders and they will help theteam progress overall this season, both on and off the field.“Coach Barrows has experience at all levels of college football and he’llbe a great addition to the program,’’ Huber states. “Coach Huster, a formerMount player, has also coached at many different levels of college footballand comes to us from the University of Cincinnati, where he was the Directorof Recruiting. In just the short amount of time he has been at the Mount, wehave really had a change in how we evaluate and recruit and we are takingadvantage of his expertise in social media.”“I am very excited to be back at the Mount after playing for Coach Huber,’’Huster said. “We’ll have 65 new players on the team this season and we’vealready had over 100 visits for 2013 graduates (as of July 1). Our main goalis to get great players of good character, who will do things the Mount way.We have a more strict evaluation process for all of the players that we recruit, which will be a benefit to the college and the football program.”Huster says the social media angle for recruiting, and being able to“broadcast” news about the school and football program is also a plus forthe Lions, as they compete with other area schools, and those regionally andnationally, for student-athletes.“We have Coach Huber’s web page and we do a lot with that and Twitter,to get the news out about the College and team,’’ adds Huster. “We tell thesestudent-athletes we want to keep them in Cincinnati and we feel that if wedo that, we have a shot at winning a lot of games and playing for a nationalchampionship.”2012 FOOTBALL GUIDE 17
