THE OPERATIONAL challengePutting real-time voice, data, and videoat commanders’ fingertipsThe convergence of the Internet with high-bandwidth cellularcommunications makes it easy for teenagers to plan theirnext party at a moment’s notice. Unfortunately, terrorists,revolutionaries, drug lords, and military threats can utilize thesesame resources to make their plans. To counter the threats’ newcommunications capabilities, commanders must react more quicklythan ever before. This requires a secure, high-speed network andhighly specialized communications tools.The real-time dissemination of data (such as messaging) bothto and from the soldier and command and control facilities hasbecome an essential requirement on the military and homelanddefense battlefields. With soldiers now exchanging vast amountsof data within the tactical environment, enormous demands areplaced upon the deployed communications infrastructure.In addition, the video data that is becoming prevalent in manyapplication domains is creating a further need for wideband datadissemination from the soldier in the field to the commander atheadquarters. A real-time video capability, along with other toolsto support situational awareness and battle management, permitstimely and accurate decision-making based on the correlationof all relevant information. This also requires an infrastructurecapable of high bandwidth and low end-to-end data latency.Harris provides a solution to these critical needs with its CombatTeam ISR System. solution overviewProviding a tactical video solution now,without the cost and risk of a custom programHarris RFCD is proud to offer the Combat Team ISR Systemutilizing our Falcon III ® products—the RF-7800MMultiband Networking Radio (MBNR), the RF-7800SSecure Personal Radio (SPR), and the RF-7400E-VP Tactical VideoProcessor (TVP).Consider the following military and security force applications:l A battalion is deployed to a domestic location to deal withan armed uprising. Once the headquarters location is set up,the lower echelons—including company and platoon—areemplaced. As each unit is put into position, its communicationscapabilities are deployed. Ultimately, each individual soldierin the field will be connected to the communicationsinfrastructure. Soldiers with helmet-mounted cameras will beable to send real-time video to the battalion headquarters forimmediate analysis.l A battalion is deployed overseas in support of a coalitionpeacekeeping mission. The physical assets of the system can betransported by land, sea, or air as necessary, and once in placecan be deployed as in the previous scenario. For this type ofapplication, additional capabilities such as battle managementsystems (BMS) also will be employed.l A battalion is dispatched on a humanitarian mission after apowerful earthquake has destroyed a large area. Even withouta local communications infrastructure, the team is able toquickly deploy a tactical communications backbone. ENABLING TECHNOLOGIESWith wideband radios, the commandercan see what the troops see in real timeThe Combat Team ISR System uses the latest in HarrisFalcon III ® technology to transmit voice, data, andvideo seamlessly between the deployed forces and thecommand staff.Multiband Networking RadioEchelons that need to view and transmit multiple video streamswill utilize the RF-7800M Multiband Networking Radio (MBNR).The RF-7800M enables the high-speed flow of real-timebattlefield situational awareness information across a secure,mobile, tactical wireless network backbone—enabling thecritical connection between squad level forces and up-echeloncommand management platforms. The MBNR incorporates theANW2 waveform which can transmit data at rates up to 5 Mbpsand an advanced, mobile, ad hoc networking (MANET) protocol.The MANET network automatically forms between the availablenodes and self-heals as nodes go in and out of range. The resultis that deployed forces communicate high-value informationincluding intelligence data, logistics, and medevac needs withsuperior speed and accuracy. The increased flow and timelinessof operational information and intelligence data from the fieldenables commanders to make faster, more informed decisions.Secure Personal RadioSoldiers using the widely fielded RF-7800S Secure Personal Radio(SPR) will take advantage of the most advanced personal teamradio in the world. The radio is designed specifically to providesecure, conferenced voice; wideband data; and situationalawareness communications at the soldier level. Much more thana standard push-to-talk voice radio, the RF-7800S provides keybenefits, such as an embedded GPS receiver, in a package thatweighs only 300 grams. Its small size and light weight allow thesoldier to focus on the mission, not the equipment load.Tactical Video Processor and Falcon C2ViewVideo Management ApplicationThe RF-7400E-VP Tactical Video Processor (TVP) is a lightweight,body-worn unit that enables soldiers at the squad and platoonlevels to stream and store full-motion video back to tacticalcommand centers or combat vehicles. Unlike other videoprocessors and video recorders, the TVP combines these twocapabilities into a single, ruggedized package. Users have fullcontrol over the video output (frame rate and resolution) andmost importantly, users can stream video over a Falcon III ® radio,including both the RF-7800M and the RF-7800S.The TVP receives an analog video feed from a camera andthen digitizes and converts the stream to an advanced videocompression standard. This enables the TVP to drastically reducebandwidth and storage requirements while maintaining imagequality. The TVP will simultaneously stream and record video whenconnected to an analog video camera. No additional software isrequired to configure TVP settings; all programming is performedfrom a web browser while the TVP is connected through aUSB portal.The complementary RF-7400E-CV001 Falcon C2View videomanagement application allows users to view and managemultiple video streams from a computer. Falcon C2View providesthe ability to archive data locally for later playback and analysis.It also allows users to forward video data to a higher echelon.
