What is a<strong>Biopsy</strong>?Your doctor has asked us toperform a biopsy on you. Thisprocedure involves taking a smallsample of tissue from a specificarea. The only preparation that isrequired is to obtain your consent<strong>and</strong> to check your bloods.The blood test must have been doneby at least the day before thebiopsy.The actual procedure takes abouthalf an hour <strong>and</strong> is done in the CTscan department by the Radiologist.(the x-ray consultant)Before the TestYou will be admitted to the DayUnit in x-ray for preparation priorto the test. On the day of your testyou may eat <strong>and</strong> drink normally<strong>and</strong>, if you take regular medication please haveyour usual morning dose.Do not take any Aspirin, Warfarin orHeparin on the day of examination.On arrival, the doctor conducting theexamination will again explain the procedureto you. He will also take written consent fromyou.If you have any worries or queries at this stagedon’t be afraid to ask. The staff will want youto be as relaxed as possible for the test <strong>and</strong> arehappy to answer any of your questions.During the TestThe radiologist will inject a local anaestheticinto the skin at the biopsy site, numbing thearea. After this the procedure should bepainless.X-rays are used to assist the doctor in locatingthe exact spot for biopsy. The doctor may needyou to suspend your breathing for a fewseconds <strong>and</strong> it is important that you follow hisinstructions carefully. You may feel a littlepressure but you should not feel any pain.When the test is completed <strong>and</strong> the specimenhas been obtained pressure will be applied overthe area for a few minutes tominimise any bleeding.AfterwardsYou will remain in the Day Unit fora few hours to rest. During this timea nurse will regularly record yourblood pressure, pulse, inspect thebiopsy site <strong>and</strong> check for anydiscomfort. You will be able to eatat this point so please feel free tobring a drink <strong>and</strong> something to eatwith you.Also please bring a book ormagazine or something else tooccupy you as time tends to passslowly when lying in bed.After the required recovery period(approximately 6 hours) you will beallowed to go home.PROVIDED:1. Someone collects you <strong>and</strong>will be able to stay with youfor the following 24 hours.2. Transport has been arrangedby yourself or your carer.
