Third general counsel in three years hired
at Lincoln National
Lincoln National Corp. has hired its third general
counsel since 2010. Adam G. Ciongoli, 43 has been
named executive vice president and general counsel
of the Radnor, Pa.­-based insurance and financial
services giant, effective May 7. He previously worked
at Willis Group Holdings, where he was group general
counsel and secretary. Prior to that, Ciongoli was
senior vice president and general counsel for Time
Warner Europe. After graduating from the University of
Pennsylvania in 1991 and Georgetown University Law
Center in 1995, Ciongoli was law clerk to U.S.
Supreme Court Justice Samuel A. Alito Jr., who was
then a member of the Third Circuit Court of Appeals
based in Newark, N.J. After a stint in the Washington
office of Kirkland & Ellis, where he worked with
Whitewater prosecutor Kenneth Starr, he served as
chief counsel to the U.S. Senate Constitution
Subcommittee, which was chaired by then­-U.S. Sen.
John Ashcroft. When Ashcroft became U.S. Attorney
General in 2001, Ciongoli joined him in the Justice
Department. After joining the corporate world, he
returned to clerk for Alito when the judge became a
Supreme Court justice in 2006. Ciongoli replaces
Nicole Jones, who left Lincoln National (NYSE:LNC),
which does business as Lincoln Financial Group, last
May only a year into the position to return to Cigna
Corp. as general counsel. Jones served as deputy
general counsel at Cigna before leaving National in
May 2010. She replaced Dennis Schoff, who left
Lincoln National earlier in 2010 after serving as
general counsel since 2002. Schoff said at the time
that Dennis Glass, who became Lincoln National’s
CEO in late 2007 shortly after joining the company
from merger partner Jefferson Pilot Corp. in North
Carolina, had turned over much of the senior
management team. Schoff consulted with the company
while it sought his replacement.
