Letters: Jackie Robinson's legacy should
be recalled often
Commentary writer Chris Lamb's excellent piece on
Jackie Robinson warrants a prompt response (""). By
virtue of Robinson's incredible courage and
indefatigable spirit, this wonderful man was clearly one
of the most important Americans of the 20th century.
His reach transcended the integration of baseball,
significant as that was, and affected considerably the
civil rights movement. His influence on both will last
forever.
The unbearable pressures he faced on a daily basis
likely took a toll on his health and vigor, and he passed
away long before his time in October 1972. He was 53.
I will never forget seeing my very first Major League
Baseball game. It was a present for my 10th birthday,
more than 60 years ago, and Robinson's Brooklyn
Dodgers played the Phillies in the old Shibe Park in
Philadelphia. He was my hero then, and he still is after
all these years! Jackie Robinson Day is a nice gesture,
but he deserves so much more.
Robinson statues are at UCLA where he played and at
some ballparks, but a prominent statue of him should
be at every major­-league park. Then all spectators can
see him and find out more about this larger­-than­-life

significance of his life Jackie Robinson was important
because of the huge impact his life had on our society,
made up of people of all races, religions and ethnic
backgrounds. Actually, we should honor him every
day.
Children of all generations should be taught the
significance of Robinson's story. It appeals to and
touches the better angels of our nature and is pertinent
to what's going on today. Robinson was a great person
and athlete. He had a quality that only the truly great
