Services Touching Almost EveryHuman NeedProvided by a federation <strong>of</strong> more than ninety<strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>Charities</strong> agencies in <strong>New</strong> York Cityand <strong>the</strong> Lower Hudson Valley.Over 375,000 served—$577 million in services• Protecting and Nurturing Childrenand Youth (49,500 served, $260 millionin services): Services include: day care,foster care, adoption, camping, sportsand after-school activities, communitycenters and preventative services.• Feeding <strong>the</strong> Hungry and Sheltering<strong>the</strong> Homeless (107,400 served, $65 millionin services): Services include: emergencymeals, emergency shelters, temporaryand transitional residences, permanentaffordable housing and preventingevictions.• Streng<strong>the</strong>ning Families and ResolvingCrises (157,000 served, $67 million inservices): Services include: informationand referral, coordinating services,counseling, financial assistance,maternity services and job readinessand placement.• Supporting <strong>the</strong> Physically andEmotionally Challenged (15,000 served,$172 million in services): Services include:supportive housing for <strong>the</strong> mentally ill,counseling, residences for those withspecial needs and disabilities and earlyintervention and special education.Points to Note:Administrative expenses are kept very low. On average <strong>Catholic</strong> <strong>Charities</strong> agencies <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><strong>Archdiocese</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>New</strong> York spend eighty-eight cents <strong>of</strong> each dollar on program expenses.While many services are provided through government partnerships, substantial privatephilanthropy is necessary to sustain <strong>the</strong> range and quality <strong>of</strong> services <strong>of</strong>fered by <strong>Catholic</strong><strong>Charities</strong> agencies.The size <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> individual segments <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> chart represents a weighted average <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>number <strong>of</strong> people served and expenditures to more accurately reflect <strong>the</strong> proportion <strong>of</strong>services provided in each category. Some services, primarily residential, are very intensiverequiring higher expenditures to serve a smaller number <strong>of</strong> individuals with specialneeds.
