<strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>National</strong> <strong>Guard</strong> <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Report</strong> <strong>2006</strong>Youth Leaders Camp <strong>2006</strong>The <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>National</strong> <strong>Guard</strong>’s40 th <strong>Annual</strong> Youth Leaders Camp washeld at Camp Dawson in Kingwood fromJune 24-30. During the one-week camp,high school students between the ages of15 and 17 experienced military life with a5:30 a.m. wake up call, physical training,and a day full of activities. The campstarted on Saturday when campers arrivedat Building 215 for inprocessing andplatoon assignment. Campers wereissued two t-shirts, a hat, a water bottle,identification card and tags before theywere turned over to their platoon TAC(train, advise, counsel) NCOs.Eighty-four students from across the state attended the camp in <strong>2006</strong>. During the weekcampers experienced barracks life at Camp Dawson and learned what it meant to worktogether as a team. Youth Leader training consisted of a weapons range with .22 caliberrifles, confidence course, drill and ceremonycompetitions, water survival training, first aidtraining, as well as team building and leadershiptraining. Campers were evaluated ontheir leadership ability and received finalevaluations along with their graduationcertificate at the conclusion of camp.Staff, support personnel and TACNCOs consisted of <strong>Army</strong> and Air <strong>National</strong><strong>Guard</strong> members from the 130th Airlift Wing,the 167 th Airlift Wing, the <strong>Army</strong> <strong>Guard</strong> Recruitingand Retention Force, as well as JointForces Headquarters, Counterdrug Office,111 th Engineer Group, 77 th Brigade, 772 ndTroop Command Battalion - Aviation,1092 nd Engineer Battalion and the 771 thTroop Command Battalion.69
