<strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>National</strong> <strong>Guard</strong> <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Report</strong> <strong>2006</strong><strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>National</strong> <strong>Guard</strong> <strong>2006</strong> “Kids Kamp”The <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>National</strong> <strong>Guard</strong> “Kids Kamp” provides a unique opportunity for childrenof <strong>Guard</strong> members to attend a quality summer camp; tofoster a sense of well-being while forming friendshipswith fellow <strong>National</strong> <strong>Guard</strong> youths of different ages,communities, and backgrounds; to understand the role ofthe <strong>Guard</strong> in state and federal missions; and to betterunderstand why their parents serve in the <strong>National</strong> <strong>Guard</strong>.The motto for this year’s camp was “This is a Drug FreeKamp.”More than 173 campers and 64 adult volunteersattended this year’s camp. The activities offered at KidsKamp included the usual “Kamp Fare,” such as swimming,boating, dancing, rock wall climbing, rifle range, STARBASE rocket launch, Avian birdsof prey, Ole Circus, drug awareness training, helicopter displays, mini C-130, and craft making.Different colored beads were used to reward campers for all activities that they participatedin throughout the camp. Campers were involved in the flag raising and lowering eachday.The overriding objective of Kids Kamp is to provide a positive experience for <strong>Guard</strong> youthin a safe and caring environment and to encourage good feelings about themselves and the<strong>National</strong> <strong>Guard</strong>. Kids Kamp is but one way to show <strong>Guard</strong> members that state leaders careabout <strong>Guard</strong> families. This endeavor reflects the <strong>Guard</strong> mantra that “<strong>Guard</strong> Pride is FamilyWide.”68
