<strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>National</strong> <strong>Guard</strong> <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Report</strong> <strong>2006</strong>The Drug Demand Reduction Program supports the McDowell County Tobacco PreventionCoalition, ATOD (Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drugs) Prevention Coalition, F.A.C.E.S. (Families,Agencies, Children, Enhancing, Services), STOP (Strong Through Our Plan) Coalition intheir efforts to reduce the demand forillegal drugs, alcohol, and tobacco useamong the youth of <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong>. For<strong>2006</strong> the total audience reached wasover 1,203,611 individuals. This includedover 960,000 individualsreached through our participation withKanawha County Schools Television(KCS-TV). We co-sponsor the "Your<strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>National</strong> <strong>Guard</strong> Today"television program. This program isbroadcast once a month, and eachprogram includes anti-drug messages.The Drug Demand ReductionProgram provided support to more than92 community-based organizations throughout <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong>. Camp BEAR PAWS, a drugawareness camp, was conducted at Camp Dawson near Kingwood for at-risk children toprovide an alternative to drug use. KIDS KAMP, also held at Camp Dawson, is for dependentsof <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>National</strong> <strong>Guard</strong> members. The purpose of this camp is to promote selfesteem,leadership skills, and drug awareness for children ages 9-15.At the national level, Adjutant GeneralTackett has been working on the integrationof the <strong>National</strong> <strong>Guard</strong> CounterdrugProgram as a part of the nation's homelandsecurity efforts. <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>National</strong><strong>Guard</strong> Counterdrug personnel havebeen doing vulnerability assessments onkey public and private infrastructure for theprevention and deterrence of potentialterrorist threats. Also, <strong>National</strong> <strong>Guard</strong>Counterdrug personnel have providedterrorist threat indicator training and security,and training support to critical infrastructures,facilities, and events.The <strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>National</strong> <strong>Guard</strong> Counterdrug Program is a major weapon in <strong>West</strong><strong>Virginia</strong>'s War on Drugs and the Nation's Global War on Terrorism.59
