<strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>National</strong> <strong>Guard</strong> <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Report</strong> <strong>2006</strong>On December 10, <strong>2006</strong>, the 167th Airlift Wing celebrated the arrival of the first (of 10,plus one spare) C-5 aircraft. As important, Sen. Byrd also announced that the 167th AirliftWing was selected as the regional isochronal inspection site for the Air <strong>National</strong> <strong>Guard</strong>. Thismeans potentially another 120 full-time jobs for the base, as an average of 33 C-5 aircraft willget periodic maintenance at the base each year.All the aircraft will be permanently transferred to Martinsburg from Altus and <strong>West</strong>overAir Force Bases on a phased basis in Fiscal Years 2007 and 2008. The current schedule ofC-5 deliveries, which has been changed several times in the last few months, is as follows:1 C-5 Aircraft: December <strong>2006</strong>1 C-5 Aircraft: January 20073 C-5 Aircraft: April-July 20073 C-5 Aircraft: August-September 20071 C-5 Aircraft: January-March 20081 C-5 Aircraft: April-June 20081 C-5 Aircraft: July-September 2008 (the spare plane)Members of the 167th Airlift Squadron have aggressively embarked in C-5 training thisyear. Personnel are undergoing seasoning training at <strong>West</strong>over, Dover, Stewart, Lackland, andTravis Air Force Bases. There are currently 25 pilots, seven engineers, and 13 loadmastersqualified on the C-5. During seasoning training, 167th Airlift Squadron crews are flying worldwideAir Mobility Command-directed airlift missions to include combat sorties in Iraq. Theactive duty loadmaster augmentee has arrived at Martinsburg to provide valuable C-5 experienceduring the conversion.22
