<strong>West</strong> <strong>Virginia</strong> <strong>National</strong> <strong>Guard</strong> <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Report</strong> <strong>2006</strong>President George W. Bush transited through the 130th Airlift Wing on 26 July, and thebase supported Air Force One for the duration of his visit. Air Force One and Secret Servicepersonnel worked closely with unit staff throughout the week prior to the visit to ensure asmooth arrival and departure for the President and his teams.September Open House: The130th Airlift Wing opened the entirebase to the community so supporterscould visit with unit members and tourbase facilities. This was the first timethe public had been allowed access tothe base since before 9-11. Thisevent allowed the public first viewing ofseveral new buildings on the base. Thewing enjoyed a huge public turnout,estimated at 5,500 people. A car andmotorcycle show was also on exhibit inaddition to vintage aircraft displays.<strong>2006</strong> Awards: In February <strong>2006</strong>, Colonel Frye presented the unit with a CommunityService Award given by the Knights of Columbus, which had been received on behalf of thewing at the Saint Francis of Assisi Church in St. Albans.The Charleston Area Alliancepresented the "Expect the Best"community service award to the130th Airlift Wing in February atthe Clay Center in Charleston.Staff Sergeant StephenGwaltney was selected by the Air<strong>National</strong> <strong>Guard</strong> to attend thePhoenix Stripe conference. Hewas one of only two personnel inthe entire Air <strong>National</strong> <strong>Guard</strong> to beselected for this prestigious honor.Chief Master Sergeant BuddyPalla was presented the 2005 Thomas E. Oole Award. This award is presented to oneWeight & Balance Technician each year at the World Weight & Balance Conference. Theperson is selected from among the <strong>Army</strong>, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and civilian contractors.17
