Implementation of the National Curriculum Statements and CAPSThe National Curriculum Statements for implementation in <strong>South</strong> <strong>African</strong> schools was phased inbetween January 2004 (Foundation Phase, Grades R-3) and January 2008 (Grade 12).Accelerated Christian Education (<strong>South</strong> Africa) has made the necessary changes and iscontinuously reviewing and updating its Learning and Teaching Support Materials (LTSMs) to ensureongoing compliance with the National Curriculum Statements.The same process is now followed with the implementation of the Curriculum Assessment PolicyStatements (CAPS) which will be introduced as follows:• Foundation Phase and Grade 10 in 2012,• Intermediate Phase, Senior Phase and Grade 11 in 2013,• Grade 12 in 2014.The main changes in approach include:• Every subject in each grade will have a single, comprehensive and concise Curriculum andAssessment Policy Statement (CAPS) that will provide details on what content teachers oughtto teach and assess on a grade-by-grade and subject –by subject basis.• Reduction of recording and reporting• Reduction of the number of projects for learners• Removing the requirement for portfolio files of learner assessments• All learning areas and programmes will be known as subjectsIn 2012 the Foundation phase subjects will then be:• Home language;• 1st additional language;• Mathematics;• Life Skills (includes Beginning knowledge; Arts & Crafts; Physical Education; Health Education)PLEASE NOTE: The SA <strong>PACE</strong> <strong>Sequence</strong> is a suggested sequence only. PLEASE READ THIS IMPORTANT INFORMATION BEFORE USING THE FOLLOWING CHARTS.FOUNDATION PHASE – LEVEL 11. Level 1 and ABCs with Ace and Christi:The ABCs Learning-To-Read programme is a phonetic skills package and forms part of Grade 1 (level 1). It is a lock-step programme (i.e. learnerswork at the same rate and together), consisting of Word Building 1001-1012, Animal Science 1001-1012, Bible Reading 1001-1012 and Math 1001-1003(39 <strong>PACE</strong>s).Animal Science and Bible Reading are done in conjunction with Word Building. These two subjects are an integral, compulsory part of the Learning-To-Read programme.The programme covers 15-18 weeks. It is recommended that 7 days are spent on each Word Building <strong>PACE</strong> (i.e. 2 days per sound and 1 day forrevision).Word Building 1013 should not be issued until the learner has completed Science, Social Studies and English 1012.2. The Three Subjects applicable are:1. Mathematics2. English3. New Afrikaans learning materials – “Afrikaans is Pret” (Available in January 2012)The emphasis is on a strong communicative approach lending itself to a combination ofgroup work and self-study.
