PROFESSIONALStephenBaldwinPosition: vice president of operations, Tulane Medical CenterAge: 34Education: bachelor’s degree in finance, Louisiana State University;master’s degree in health administration, Tulane UniversityAt age 34, Stephen Baldwin, vice president of operationsat Tulane Medical Center, already has a wealthof experience from rebuilding a hospital that incurred$100 million in damage from Hurricane Katrina.After the storm, Baldwin led the rebuilding of Tulane’sCancer Center, a $12 million project that included construction,gathering staff and recruiting physicians, allfrom Tulane’s temporary location in Covington. After thecenter was rebuilt, Baldwin rebuilt anesthesia services byorganizing a team of seven anesthesiologists and 10 certifiedregistered nurse anesthetists.His next project was to lead an $89 million restoration ofTulane Medical Center’s hospital, including reopening itspharmacy, cafeteria and central sterile and operating rooms.The hospital was operational just one year after thestorm.“I’ve always been in health care,” said Baldwin, whoearned a master’s degree in health administration fromTulane University. “I started in a clinical EMS role, and Idecided to go into management. Health care is one of theprofessions in which you receive immediate gratification.”Baldwin began his career at Tulane Medical Centernine years ago as an administrative resident. He thenmoved into various managerial positions before becomingdirector of the Tulane Cancer Center.After serving as associate vice president of operations,he became vice president of operations. In both positions,he has directed the operations of physician clinics, clinicaland non-clinical departments and service lines.
