Mangrove Forest Restoration in Andhra Pradesh, India4.2.6. De-silting of canals and casualty replacementThe bunds formed by the deposition of the excavated soil duringcanal digging will silt the canals during the monsoon seasons. Thesilted canals have to be de-silted before the onset of summer, becauseduring summer the tidal amplitude is generally low. Tidal flushingis very important during summer because the soil salinity will shootup due to high temperature and cause damage to the roots of theseedlings. Such seedlings will be replanted in the following monsoonseason. The survival percentage is measured in the initial period forbetter monitoring. Initially the growth rate was slow and after 2 to 3years the seedling growth rate was faster. The natural regenerationof the seedlings also occurs simultaneously. After four years, theplanted saplings start bearing fruits, which will regenerate, and thedensity of the area will increase.4.3. Mangrove area restoredA total area of 520 ha of degraded mangroves was restored in theGodavari and Krishna mangroves. Restoration was carried out inthe MangroveManagementUnits (MMU) ofMatlapalem,D i n d u ,Bhairavalanka,Gadimoga andKobbarichettupetain Godavari andDheenadayalapuram,Zinkapalem andNali in Krishna Mangroves. An area of 9,442 ha is under themanagement of eight village level institutions. The area restored byeach VLI and the management area allotted to respectivedemonstration village for mangrove protection and management isgiven in Table 1.19
