WarrantyWARRANTYTERMS AND CONDITIONSIn this warranty Simba International Ltd., is referred to as “the Company”.1. Subject to the provisions of this warranty the Company warrants each new machine sold by it tobe sold free from any defect in material or workmanship for a period of 12 months from date ofinstallation with the end-user.Some specific items have additional warranty over and above the standard 12 months. Details ofthese can be obtained upon request directly from the distributor or Simba International Ltd.2. If the machine or part thereof supplied by the Company is not in accordance with the warrantygiven in clause 1 the Company will at its option:(a)(b)(c)make good the machine or part thereof at the Company’s expense, ormake an allowance to the purchaser against the purchase price of the machine or partthereof, oraccept the return of the machine and at the buyers option either:I) repay or allow the buyer the invoice price of the machine or part thereof, orII) replace the machine or part thereof as is reasonably practical.3. This warranty shall not oblige the Company to make any payment in respect of loss of profit orother consequential loss or contingent liability of the Purchaser alleged to arise from any defectin the machine or impose any liability on the Company other than that contained in clause 2.4. Any claim under this warranty must be notified to the Company in writing specifying the matterscomplained of within 14 days from the date of repair.5. Any claim under this warranty must be made by the original purchaser of the machine and is notassignable to any third party.6. If the purchaser hires out the machine to any third party the warranty shall apply only to mattersnotified to the Company in writing within 90 days of the date of delivery and clause 1 shall be readas if the period of 90 days were substituted for the period of 12 months.7. The warranty will cease to apply if:(a)(b)(c)(d)(e)(f)(g)(h)any parts not made, supplied or approved in writing by the Company are fitted to the machine orany repair is carried out to the machine other than by or with the express written approval of theCompany orany alterations not expressly authorized by the Company in writing are made to the machine orthe machine is damaged by accident orthe machine is abused or overloaded or used for a purpose or load beyond its design capabilities,or used in conjunction with a tractor whose power output capability exceeds the stated implementpower requirement by more than 40%. For the purpose of these terms and conditions, “statedimplement power requirement” refers to wheeled tractors unless specifically stated. These powerrequirements should be reduced by 20% when used in conjunction with tracked tractors.the machine is operated as part of a ‘cultivation train’ where more than one implement is beingtowed, without the express written approval of Simba International Ltd.any maintenance is not carried out in accordance with the service schedules in the operator’smanual.the Installation and Warranty Registration Certificate is not received by Simba International Ltd.,Service Dept., Woodbridge Road, Sleaford, Lincolnshire, England, NG34 7EW, within 7 days ofinstalling a new machine.4Simba SLOperating Instructions

IntroductionIntroductionForewordMake sure you have read and follow theOperating Instructions carefully before usingthe machine. By doing so, you will avoidaccidents, reduce repair costs and downtimeand increase the reliability and service lifeof your machine. Pay attention to the safetyinstructions!Simba Great Plains will not accept anyresponsibility for any damage or malfunctionsresulting from failure to comply with theOperating Instructions.These Operating Instructions will assistyou in getting to know your machine and inusing it correctly for its intended purposes.First, you are given general instructions inhandling the machine. This is followed bysections on servicing, maintenance andthe action to be taken should a malfunctionoccur.We reserve the right to alterillustrations as well as technicaldata and weights contained in theseOperating Instructions for the purposeof improving the machine.Warranty GuidelinesThe period of liability for material defects(warranty) relating to our products is 12months. In the case of written deviations fromthe statutory provisions, these agreementsshall apply.They shall become effective upon installationof the machine with the end customer. Allwear parts are excluded from the warranty.All warranty claims must be submitted toSimba Great Plains via your dealer.These operating instructions are to be readand followed by all persons working on orwith the machine, e.g.:• Operation (including preparation,remedying of faults in the operatingsequence and servicing).• Maintenance (maintenance andinspection)• Transportation.Together with the Operating Instructions,you receive a Spare Parts List and aMachine Registration form. Field servicetechnicians will instruct you in the operationand servicing of your machine. Followingthis, the Machine Registration form is tobe returned to your dealer. The following graphicsymbols are used:Important!Risk of injury!Risk of fatal and serious injuries!It is important that all the safety instructionscontained in these Operating Instructionsand all the warning signs on the machineare read carefully.Ensure that the warning signs are legible.Replace any signs that are missing ordamaged.These instructions must be followed in orderto prevent accidents. Inform other users ofthe warnings and safety instructions.Do not carry out any operations which mayaffect safe use of the machine.All references to left and right in this manualare made from the rear of the machine, facingthe direction of travel (unless otherwisestated).10Simba SLOperating Instructions

Safety Data1.2 Use for the IntendedPurposeThe Simba Great Plains SL is built usingthe latest technology and in accordance withthe relevant recognised safety regulations.However, risks of injury for the operator orthird parties and impairment of the machineor other tangible assets can arise during use.The machine is only to be operated whenin a technically perfect condition and for theintended purpose, taking into considerationsafety and risks and following the OperatingInstructions. In particular, faults that canimpair safety are to be remedied immediately.Original parts and accessories fromSimba Great Plains have been speciallydesigned for this machine. Spare partsand accessories not supplied by us havenot been tested or authorised. Installationor use of non-original Simba Great Plainsproducts may have a detrimental effect onspecific design features of the machine andaffect the safety of machine operators andthe machine itself. Simba Great Plains willaccept no liability for damage resulting fromthe use of non-original parts or accessories.The Simba Great Plains SL is designedsolely as a cultivation implement. Use forany other purpose, e.g., as a means oftransport, will be deemed to be improperuse. Simba Great Plains will accept noliability for damage resulting from improperuse. The risk will be borne solely by theoperator.Use of the SL behind high power tractors(in excess of 40% above the maximumrecommended) can lead to high loadsand stresses which can cause long termstructural damage to the chassis andkey components. Such overloading cancompromise safety and is to be avoided.1.3 Operational SafetyThe machine is to be put in operationonly after instruction has been providedby an employee of the authorised dealeror an employee of Simba Great Plains.The “Machine Registration” form is to becompleted and returned to your dealer.All protective and safety equipment, suchas removable protective equipment, mustbe in place and functioning reliably beforethe machine is put in use.Check screws and bolts regularlyfor tightness and retighten ifnecessary.In the event of malfunctions,stop and secure the machineimmediately.Ensure that any faults are remediedimmediately.1.4 No Liability forConsequential DamageThe SL has been manufactured by SimbaGreat Plains with great care. However,problems may still occur when it is used forthe intended purpose. These may include:• Worn wearing parts.• Damage caused by external factors.• Incorrect driving speeds.• Incorrect setting of the unit (incorrectattachment, non-adherence to the Settinginstructions).Therefore, it is crucial to alwayscheck your machine before andduring operation for correctoperation and adequate applicationaccuracy.Compensation claims for damage which hasnot occurred to the machine is excluded.This includes any consequential damageresulting from incorrect operation.Simba SL 11Operating Instructions

Safety Data1.5 Road Traffic SafetyWhen driving on public roads, tracks andareas, it is important to observe the relevantroad traffic laws as well as the specificregulations relating to this machine.Pay attention to the permitted axleloads, tyre carrying capacity, andtotal weight in order to maintainadequate braking and steerability(these figures are shown on theserial plate).Passengers on the machine arestrictly forbidden!Max. road transport speed 16mph(25km/h).1.6 Accident PreventionIn addition to the Operating Instructions, it isimportant to observe the accident preventionregulations specified by agricultural tradeassociations. It is the Operator’s responsibilityto ensure that all other persons are excludedfrom the danger zones surrounding or on themachine during its operation.It is the Owner’s responsibility to ensure:• the Operator is trained and competent touse the machine & tractor,• the tractor is suitable for the machine• adequate Risk and COSHH assessmentshave been undertaken regarding themachine’s use. Specifically, these includeissues concerning contact with the soil,dust, crop residues, chemicals, lubricantsand other compounds during operation ormaintenance, and the possibility of stonesbeing ejected at high speed during work.Beware of trapping hazards whenmanipulating the parking standsor other moving parts. Ensureany heavy components are fullysupported when removing pins /bolts.1.6.1 Hitching-up themachineThere is a risk of injury when hitching/unhitching the machine. Observe thefollowing:• Secure the machine against rolling.• Take special care when reversing thetractor!• There is a risk of being crushed betweenthe machine and the tractor!• Park the machine on firm, level ground.1.6.2 On the Hydraulic SystemDo not connect the hydraulic lines to thetractor until both hydraulic systems (machineand tractor) are depressurised.Any hydraulic system containingan accumulator can remainunder pressure permanently(even after following manualdepressurisation procedureswith a tractor / implementcombination). It is thereforeimportant to check all lines, pipes,and screw connections regularlyfor leaks and any recognisableexternal damage.The hydraulic circuit containsspecialised fittings which shouldnot be tampered with under anycircumstances. Do not attemptto modify hose routings or hoseclamping arrangements, doing somy cause serious damage to themachine and/or injury.12Simba SLOperating Instructions

1. Safety DataOnly use appropriate aids when checkingfor leaks. Repair any damage immediately.Spurting oil can cause injuries and fires!In case of injury, contact a doctor immediately.The socket and plugs for the hydraulicconnections between the tractor and themachine should be colour-coded in orderto avoid incorrect use.Do not stand on the machine while it is inoperation!Operators must have a valid driving licencein order to drive on public roads. In theoperating area, the operator is responsiblefor third parties.The person in charge must:• provide the operator with a copy of theOperating Instructions, and• ensure that the operator has read andunderstood the instructions.Fig. 1.01: HydraulicTaps1.6.3 Changing Equipment• Secure the machine to prevent it fromaccidentally rolling away!• Use suitable supports to secure anyraised frame sections suspended aboveyou!• Caution! Risk of injury due to projectingparts!Never climb on to rotating partssuch as the roll unit. These partsmay rotate causing you to slip andsuffer serious injury!Removing components duringmaintenance may affect thestability of the machine. Ensureit is fully supported in case ofunexpected weight shifts.1.6.4 During OperationEnsure that the working range and the areaaround the machine are clear (children!)before operating the machine.Always ensure adequate visibility!• make sure that the operator is aware of thespecific regulations relating to the machinewhen driving on public roads.1.7 Servicing &MaintenanceEnsure that regular checks and inspectionsare always carried out within the periodsrequired by law or specified in theseOperating Instructions.When carrying out service and maintenancework always:• switch off the tractor engine and removethe ignition key.• wait until all the machine parts havestopped moving.• depressurise the hydraulic system.Many hydraulic circuits contain lock orovercentre valves which can retain pressurein the lines even after depressurising thetractor side of these circuits. If in doubt,consult trained personnel (such as yourlocal Simba Great Plains Dealer) to ensuresuch valves are depressurised to the correctprocedure before removing or servicingany parts connected downstream of thesevalves.Simba SL 13Operating Instructions

1. Safety DataCheck all hydraulic lines for leaks, looseconnections, chafe marks and damage.Remedy any deficiencies immediately! Payparticular attention to hose renewal intervalsas outlined in the specific sections whichfollow. ALL hydraulic hoses have a safemaximum working life of 6 (SIX) years fromdate of installation, provided they remain in asafe condition. Hoses which exceed 6 yearsof age should be replaced, or inspected andcertified by a suitably qualified person tohave an extended life period which shouldbe recorded.Pay particular attention to those items whichrequire specialist service tools or trainingto be carried out by qualified personnel. Donot attempt to service these items yourself!These include items retaining pressure (e.g.accumulator circuits), or force (e.g. springtines), and DD Rolls of any type.Prior to performing maintenance andservicing work, ensure that the machineis positioned on solid, level ground and issecured to prevent it rolling away. Do notuse any parts to climb on to the machineunless they are specifically designed forthis purpose.Before cleaning the machine with water,steam jets (high-pressure cleaningapparatus) or other cleaning agents, coverall openings into which, for reasons of safetyor operation, no water, steam or cleaningagents are to penetrate (bearings, forinstance).Lubricate all the lubricating points to forceout any trapped water.When carrying out servicing and maintenancework, retighten any loose screw connections.On a new machine tighten all nuts andbolts after 5 hours work and again after 15hours. This also applies to parts that havebeen moved or replaced. After the initial 15hours of work a once a week check shouldbe sufficient depending on daily work rates.1.8 Operating AreasThe operating areas include the drawbar,hydraulic connections and depth adjustmentequipment as well as all operating pointsrequiring maintenance.All operating areas will be specified anddescribed in detail in the following chapterson servicing and maintenance.Observe all safety regulations included inthe section dealing with Safety, and in thesubsequent sections.1.9 Authorised OperatorsOnly those persons who have beenauthorised and instructed by the operatormay operate the machine. The operatormust be at least 16 years of age.1.10 ProtectiveEquipmentFor operation and maintenance, you require:• Tight fitting clothing.• Strong protective gloves (to provideprotection against sharp-edged machinecomponents).• Protective goggles (to stop dirt getting intoyour eyes).When servicing the machine take precautionsagainst soil, dust, seed coatings, oil or anyother hazardous substances that you mightencounter.14Simba SLOperating Instructions

2. Transportation / Installation2. Transportation andInstallationTransportation and initial installation of themachine are described in this chapter.2.1 DeliveryThe machine is normally delivered fully assembled.In some cases, however, certainelements of the machine may have beenmounted differently for transportation purposes(the lights may be mounted verticallyrather than in their usual horizontal positionfor example). In these instances pleasecontact your Simba Great Plains dealer.• The machine should be hitched to a tractorand driven off a low-loader.2.2 TransportationThe SL can be transported on public roadsby hitching it up to a tractor or on a lowloader.• It is important to observe the permitteddimensions and weights when transportingthe machine.2.3 InstallationWhen carrying out installation andmaintenance work there is a higher riskof injury. It is important that you familiariseyourself with the machine and read theOperating Instructions beforehand.Operator instruction and initial installation ofthe machine are carried out by our servicetechnicians or authorised distributors.The machine must not be used in any waybeforehand! The machine can only bereleased for operation after instructions havebeen provided by our service technicians orauthorised distributors.• If any modules or parts have been removedfor transportation, these shall be mounted byour service technicians/authorised dealersbefore the instruction takes place.• Check all important screw connections!• Lubricate all nipples and joints!• Check all hydraulic connections and linesfor damage.• If the machine is transported on a trailer ora low-loader, it must be secured using strapsor other devices.• Before transporting the machine on publicroads, it must be adjusted to its transportationposition and the stipulations relating toroad transportation fulfilled.• The maximum permissible transport speedis 25 km /h (16mph)Simba SL 15Operating Instructions

Transportation / Installation2.4 Hitching Up2.4.1 Hitching up a Tractorto the SL / Preparing forTransportWhen hitching-up the machine,ensure that no-one is between thetractor and the machine.When the SL is parked for extendedperiods of time it should ideally beleft in the unfolded, i.e. work positionfor stability, safety and ease ofaccess for maintenance. However,parking the SL in the folded position(ensuring the transport lock isengaged) is acceptable in thenormal course of operation.Tractor Oil Flow Adjustment:As a general rule the tractor oil flowrate should be set in the lowest settingbefore starting. This can thenbe increased to allow the desiredrate of operation as applicable.This will minimise excessive oil flowand consequent power usage andheat generation.2. Ensure the tractor hydraulics aredepressurised and in the locked orclosed (not float) setting. Ensure theaxle taps are closed.3. Couple the hydraulic hoses to thetractor ensuring that the two winghoses (yellow) are together and thelift cylinder hoses (red) are together.There is also a single hose (blue) tocontrol the wing lock.4. Raise the front of the machine andmove the parking stand to the workposition.5. If the machine is already folded it isnow ready for transport. If the machineis unfolded please refer to 2.6.2.Ensure that the wing lock is engagedcorrectly before transporting themachine.Machines Fitted with Clevis TypeDrawbar:Machines Fitted with Bar CouplerDrawbar:Fig. 2.02: Clevis Type Drawbar1. Reverse the tractor up to the machinehitch.Fig. 2.01: Bar Coupler1. Reverse the tractor up to the barcoupler and engage the link arms.2. Ensure the tractor hydraulics aredepressurised and in the locked orclosed (not float) setting. Ensure theaxle taps are closed.16Simba SLOperating Instructions

Couple the hydraulic hoses to thetractor ensuring that the two winghoses (yellow) are together, the lift axlecylinder hoses (red) are together andthe drawbar cylinder hoses (green) aretogether. There is also a single hose(blue) to control the wing lock.4. Raise / lower the hitch into positionusing the drawbar cylinder. Reversethe tractor and couple up to the tractordrawbar clevis.Do not use the tractor pick-up hitchto attach the machine to the tractor.This could cause damage to thetractor and the machine.4. Move the parking stand to the workposition.5. If the machine is already folded it isnow ready for transport. If the machineis unfolded please refer to 2.6.2.Ensure that the wing lock is engagedcorrectly before transporting themachine.2.5 Air Brake CouplingProcedurePlease refer to the following procedurewhen coupling or decoupling any item ofSimba Great Plains machinery fitted with anAIR brake or AIR and HYDRAULIC brakesystem. Please note that this proceduredoes not apply to any machines fitted witha HYDRAULIC system ONLY.2.5.1 When Coupling2. With the machine connected couplethe air lines. When coupling ensure theyellow line is attached first followed bythe red line.3. Your brake hoses are now attachedand are ready for operation.4. Continue with the coupling process asinstructed in Section 2.4.1.2.5.2 When De-coupling1. Bring the machine to the parkingposition as instructed to in Section 2.9.2. With the machine still connected tothe tractor remove the red brake linefollowed by the yellow line.3. Your brakes will now be ON and willhold, ensuring they have been adjustedand maintained correctly, the machinein position. Note: if the machine‘s tankis drained of air once all lines havebeen detached the brakes will come off(same situation as pushing the shuntvalve).4. Continue de-coupling the machine untilit is fully disconnected.By following the above instructionsyou will see that at NO pointin the coupling or decouplingprocess has the red line beenleft in the tractor on its own.This is intentional and should beconsidered the ‘rule’ to couplingthe hoses.1. Reverse up to the machine andconnect the machine to the tractor asinstructed to in Section 2.4.1.Simba SL 17Operating Instructions

2. Transportation / Installation2.6 Folding and Unfolding2.6.1 Unfolding into the WorkPosition1. Fully raise the machine on the reartransport axle and the front linkage /drawbar cylinder (if fitted).2. Pressure the wing lock cylinder (singleline, blue tie) to disengage the winglock.3. Shut the taps on the axle cylinder tosecure it for transport. On machinesfitted with a clevis type drawbar retractthe drawbar cylinder onto the shims(usually the amount used in work or asingle silver 51mm shim will suffice).1xSilver51mmFig. 2.03: Clevis Type DrawbarA lower transport height can beachieved by using shims in the axlecylinder if desired.Fig. 2.02: Wing Lock3. Unfold the wings (yellow ties) andcontinue to pressure down to ensurethey will hold in work.4. The machine is now ready for roadtransport.Road transport speed should notexceed 25kmh (16mph).4. 4. Adjustment / OperationThe Simba Great Plains SL is anamalgamation of time proven, successfulSimba Great Plains designed componentsbrought together to form this importantdevelopment. The SL provides a one passmix with a fissured layer at disc depth forthrough drainage and root access to lowerhorizons. This enables rapid drainageand access after rain, creating a greatereffective capacity for moisture compared toploughing for the same effective total depthof cultivation.In principle, the machine is an offset discwith Spring Reset tines, designed for lowdraft, high speed operations. The additionof a rear mounted roll enables effectivecultivation in one pass. The leading setof disc blades cultivate the top horizon,minimising clod formation and reducingtine loadings and blockage. This starts the‘top down’ cultivation process, retainingweathered tilth in the surface level for staleseedbed purposes. The front row of discsis then followed by tines. The tines work toshatter at depth retaining the surface intactto leave astale seedbed. This eliminatesthe problem of ‘wet years’ in non-ploughbased terms. The key to the SL’s successare the tines which maintain shatter acrossthe full width of cultivation. The rear roll thenconsolidates the surface, cracks any clodsand firms the soil profile after the rear gangcompletes mixing to depth. 4. Adjustment / Operation4.2 Disc UnitsThe SL features two rows of discs whichchop and mix the crop residue. A discspacing of 250mm ensures a fine tilth.The discs fitted to the SL are 500mm indiameter (20”) and 6mm thick. They aremanufactured from heat treated chromeboron steel which ensures excellent wearresistance and enhanced working life. Eachdisc is mounted on a Pro-Flex sprung leaflinked to a track rod system. Gang anglescan be varied with ease and accuracy usinga graduated adjuster.Adjustable angling of the discs (between10°-25°) ensures penetration and stubblemixing are achieved in one pass. Allthis is achieved without compromise toconsolidation.4.3 Spring Reset TinesSpring Reset tines have a robust, basic constructionand are suitable for all soil types.The spring-loaded auto-reset system witha 500kg trip force on each tine preventsdamage to the tines and tine brackets.When the auto reset system is activated aninitial progressive phase holds the tine inthe ground in a steady position until the trippoint is reached. Adjustment / Operation4.4 DD Light RollerThe DD Light roller is made up of individualDouble Disc (patented) Ring segments.The DD Light roll is designed to consolidatethe soil whilst cutting and crushing any clods.Even in heavy, wet soils it can easily beoperated with minimal blockages occurring.The rear DD Light roller carries a proportion ofthe machine’s weight to ensure consolidation.It also regulates the depth of the disc units.The corrugated surface left by the roller isweatherproof both for wet or dry situations.4.5 Work SettingsOptimum performance has been found tobe achieved when the DD Light roll ringshave worn away the painted finish leavinga smooth shiny surface. When the DD Lightrings are new or rusty, soil may tend to pickup on the surface and blockage may occur,this will reduce when the rings are shinyagain.The SL should be run with the chassis levelto slightly tail low. In practice it is possibleto use the SL on ground conditions that areunsuitable to achieve the desired effect,and it is usually possible to operate the DDLight roll without regular blockage undersuch unsuitable conditions, assuming thatthe roll assemblies are tight, the scraperscorrectly adjusted and rings smooth. Assuch, especially under wet conditions, it isadvisable to check on the cultivation effectof the SL.The SL should be lifted fully clear of theground on the transport wheels for allheadland turns. 4. Adjustment / Operation4.7 Adjusting DepthTo change the working depth it is advisableto lift the machine clear of the ground so thatthe rear roll linkage becomes loose. Thedepth is changed by adding shims aboveand below the collar on the depth control rod.COLLARDEPTH CONTROL ROD4.8 Using ShimsBefore using shims to alter machine settingsensure the machine is stationary and thetractor is turned off with the keys out. Ensurethat all operators are clear of the machineand that no load is being held on any existingshims in the cylinder / depth control rod.To fit the shims hold them by the handle and,using a firm action, clip them onto the rodas shown in Fig. 4.06. They are removed byusing a finger to pull firmly on the handle.Check the cylinder / depth controlrod for damage and debris beforefitting shims.Fig. 4.05: Roll LinkageWhen the depth has been altered, lower themachine into work and check operation. Ifthe depth change has been significant thenother settings could be affected. This couldbe chassis pitch (front to rear) and disc anglefor the given depth.On machines fitted with a bar couplerdrawbar the tractor link arms should be usedin conjunction with the rear roll to determineworking depth / pitch.Only attempt to add or removeshims using the handle. Trying tomanipulate shims using the jawscould result in injury.When changing machine settingsensure both sides of the machinemirror each other. The left handcylinder should contain the sameamount of shims as the right, forexample. Failure to do this couldresult in damage to the machine.On machines fitted with a clevis type drawbarthe pitch and working depth are determinedusing shims in the drawbar cylinder and therear roll depth control rods.A small amount of cultivation, eg. a 20metre run, should be carried out beforealtering these settings to check whetherthey are now suitable for the cultivationeffect required. Adjustment / Operation4.9 Work InstructionsDriving speedThe SL can be driven at speeds of up to 12km/h.This depends on the field conditions (typeof soil, surface trash, etc.).Drive more slowly if the conditions aredifficult or a firmer finish is required.Turning:Before turning, the machine shouldbe eased fully out of work ontothe transport wheels while movingforward. Likewise, it should easedback into work once the turn hasbeen completed. Servicing andMaintenanceFollow the safety instructions forservicing and maintenance.5.1 ServicingYour machine has been designed andconstructed for maximum performance,operational efficiency and operatorfriendliness under a wide variety of operatingconditions.Prior to delivery, your machine has beenchecked at the factory and by your authoriseddealer to ensure that you receive a machinein optimum condition.To ensure trouble-free operation,it is important that servicing andmaintenance work is performed atthe recommended intervals.5.2 CleaningIn order to ensure that the machine isalways in operating condition and to achieveoptimum performance, perform the cleaningand servicing work at regular intervals.Avoid cleaning the roll / disc bearings witha high- pressure hose or a direct water jet.The housing, screwed connections and ballbearings are not watertight.5.3 Disc HubMaintenanceGrease every disc hub until greaseshows from the seals according tothe lubricating intervals outlined insection 5.11.Check disc hubs regularly fortightness.Regularly examine hub caps,seals and pivot bolts and alltracking bolts for tightness andeffectiveness twice weekly orevery 50 working hours (whicheveris more frequent).5.3.1 Tightening Disc Hubs1 Ensure that the bearing seal is in thecorrect orientation when replacing /assembling components.2 Ensure that the stub axle is free fromdirt and the nut and outer bearing caneasily slide on it.3 Tighten the crown nut with a handspanner (a torque wrench is notrequired) while turning the hubclockwise until the bearing dragsslightly (you feel the hub turningheavily). Some resistance will be dueto friction from the seal.4 Turn back the crown nut to the nextlocking position. Even if the tighteningof the nut has reached an exact fixingposition, turn it back.5 Insert the retaining pin.6 Try to shake/rock the outer edge of thehub/spindle: play of 0.1 / 0.2mm willnot reduce the bearings’ life and, inaddition, prevents overheating. 5. Servicing and Maintenance5.3.2 Bearing SealsIt is important when replacing the labyrinthtype bearing seals in disc hubs that the sealis fitted the right way round. The chamferedlip side should be at the outside of thebearing housing, nearest the disc arm (seeFig. 5.02). This chamfered lip prevents dirtingress into the housing and also allowsgrease to be flushed though when greasing.Chamfered SealSafely support unfolded machinein raised position using tapsand stands before attemptingmaintenance work on tines.Do not attempt to assist fitting tinepoints with a steel headed hammer,this can lead to splintering of themetal due to its hardness, whichcan cause injury. Servicing and Maintenance5.5 DD Light RollThe spacers and rings on the DD Light Rollare held under tension by the end plates atthe outer ends of the roll tube.Specialist equipment is requiredfor the disassembly of DD Lightrollers. Please consult yourdealer under any circumstancesthat require disassembly of theseaxles.Maintenance of these rollers is limitedto yearly/end of season greasing of thebearings and regular inspection to ensurethe assemblies are tight, and scrapers arecorrectly set.The scraper is intended to clear dirtfrom blocking between adjacent DDrings. If adjustment to the scrapersis required ensure that the scrapercannot contact the spacer evenunder load. Regularly inspect thespacers for signs of wear and adjustany scrapers to ensure no contactcan be made.5.6 Brakes & Wheel HubsThe brakes should be tested before using forthe first time and after the first laden journey.Check that the road and parkingbrakes operate and releasecorrectly before using themachine.Check for hydraulic fluid and airleaks.Brake and hub maintenance andservicing should be carried out byan authorised Simba Great Plainsdealer.5.7 HydraulicsA low oil flow should be used,i.e., tractor tickover or low flowselected.The wing circuit is controlled by anovercentre valve contained withinthe manifold block which positivelylocks oil flow until pressurised bythe tractor. System pressure canbe retained in the circuit evenafter depressurisation of thetractor quick release couplings.Exercise extreme care whenchecking the valve or circuits, andunder no circumstances attemptto adjust or loosen fittings withoutprior reference to your authoriseddealer, and detailed maintenanceinstructions.The hydraulic circuit containsspecialised fittings which shouldnot be tampered with under anycircumstances. Regularlubrication also contributes towardsextending the service life of your machine.The recommended lubricating intervals arespecified in “Maintenance Overview”.After it has been washed using a highpressurehose or steam cleaned, themachine should always be lubricated usinga grease gun.5.13 Handling ofLubricantsPlease ensure that you read the followinginstructions as well as the relevantinformation. Thisgrease is a Complex soap dispersed in amineral oil and is interpreted by IARC asbeing non-carcinogenic. Grease cartridgesare available from Simba Great Plains(P12710). Using this grease in combinationwith the labyrinth type seal it is permissibleto lengthen the greasing interval on thedisc hubs to 200 hours.
